Class leader 3701 in as delivered Bronco scheme trails 3753 and 3723 while working EV01 loaded coal through Yukan on 30-10-14.

In 2005 QR and UGL started to rebuild a total of 63 x 3100 class (command units) and 3200 class (slave units) into the 3700 class.

The conversion included removal of the no 2 end cab, (exterior blanked over and still visible) , Conversion to Seimens AC control system and added weight.

The first 3, 3701 to 3703 were completed in Townsville and the only 3 painted into Bronco scheme. The remainder of the class were rebuilt at UGL's NSW Broadmeadow plant requiring road transport to and from the plant.

3701 was rebuilt from 3226, which had earlier derailment damage and entered service on 21-12-2005
