In 1971/72 the South Australian Railways had a small class of six ALCo DL500Gs built under licence by A E Goodwin of Sydney, similar in many respects to the NSWGR 442 class being built at the same time.
Over the years the class see-sawed between the broad and standard gauge lines in South Australia. In this July 1986 view taken at Mile End, I'm pretty sure 703 was still on standard gauge.
As of October 2014, three of the six, including 703, were still active with Genesee & Wyoming Australia.
