The use of assistant locomotives through the Adelaide Hills was an everyday occurrence in broad gauge days and still occurs on a limited basis to this day.
Locos are attached or detached either to the front of the train or coupled inside the lead locos, true banking only happens when their are breakdowns.
On Saturday evening 19 February 1994 locos C506/S313 (out of sight) hauling train no.7AM5 stalled in the Coromandel area and ALCos 961/963 were summoned to assist.
