Silverton had its origins in the historic Silverton Tramway Co based in Broken Hill.
In the 1990s the company was reinvented by its then owners and expanded its operations beyond merely shunting in Broken Hill.
On 3 May 1996 two Silverton units rest between banking (helper) duties at Tailem Bend in South Australia. ALCo 442s2 was originally built for the New South Wales Government Railway in 1972 as no.44217, while 31 in the background was originally South Australian Railways 830 class no.857.
