It was announced this week that Australia’s iconic long distance passenger trains The Ghan and The Indian Pacific have been sold by their current owner Serco to an Australian based equity fund manager, Allegro Funds.
There appears to be some confusion as to how much the Great Southern Rail business is being sold for, with sums of anywhere between A$5m and A$20m being mentioned.
As well as The Ghan (Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin) and The Indian Pacific (Sydney-Adelaide-Perth) GSR also operates The Overland service between Melbourne and Adelaide - the latter has only been kept running through subsidies from the Victorian and South Australian state governments.
The deal is expected to be signed off on later this year.
On 19 February 2015 a Perth bound Indian Pacific service passes through two Wells north of Adelaide.
