Derelict Victorian Railways 2-8-0 steam loco J-549 is seen stored at Ararat loco depot, 130 miles west of Melbourne. The oil-burning "J" entered service in 1954 and was withdrawn from active service around 1972. It was then left here at the loco depot until a later date when it was removed and restored to service at the Victorian Goldfields Railway at Maldon, Victoria. J-549 is currently out of service pending repairs.
Stabled in front of J-549 can be seen 0-6-0 shunting loco W-263 and South Australian loco 942, which was at the depot for crew training. On the right of my picture can be seen a yellow Rail Tractor number RT-48 and in front of that is diesel loco Y-156. 12:30pm, Saturday the 29th of October, 1983.
