The 422 class totalling 20 units were built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the New South Wales Government Railways in 1969/70.
On 23 March 1994 42214/42219 head their loaded train of limestone along the Marulan Quarry branch and around the colloquially named 'Suicide Curve'.
Both were sold in 2000 to Genesee & Wyoming subsidiary Australian Railroad Group. 42214 was partially rebuilt and renumbered 2203 and saw use on Alice to Darwin railway construction trains. In 2015 it was exported to a South African rail contractor.
