After the phase out of steam on the South Maitland Railway in 1983, branch line diesels from the state government rail operator commenced working trains over the SMR.
Four 48 class ALCos pass steam age infrastructure at Weston with a loaded coal train from Pelton in May 1999 (date needs checking).
