Seventeen EMD-powered CL class locomotives were built for the Commonwealth Railways by Clyde Engineering of Sydney. In 1978 ownership passed to Australian National, who in 1993 had the class rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen Australia.
CL14 was renumbered CLP11 and in the privatisation era ownership passed to Aurizon - the locomotive is now stored with little chance of reactivation.
