DC 4588 at Newmarket Railway Station, Auckland, New Zealand on 03/07/1986 with Local Suburban Service heading to Auckland Strand Street Station.
DC 4588 was built in 1964 at General Motors (EMD), Canada - EMD G12 A2070 as DC 4588 (A1A-A1A, livery:NZGR Carnation/Midland Red, with 3 White strips), entered service 12/1964, renumbered c1978 to DA 909, rebuilt 08/1980 at Clyde Eng, SA - EMD G22AR 80/945 as DC 4588, altered c1993 at Woburn Shops (livery:NZRL Mid Blue (&Yellow BS 08e51/Grey BS 11A11), exported to Tasmania (Arrived 16/12/1998). entered Service 1999 and Withdrawn 10/2002.
DC 4588 was unique in being the only Locomotive to run new in New Zealand to be exported as 2nd Hand to Australia and to run on Mainline Freight Services..
85 Class DC GM EMD G22AR Locomotives were rebuilt from GM EMD G12. 80 were rebuilt at Clyde, Rosewater, Adelaide, South Australia between 1978-1983 and 5 were rebuilt at Woburn Workshops, Wellington in 1980/1. 15 DC's were reclassed to DCP (Passenger) from about 2002.
Only around 30 now in service and the Class probably be withdrawn in the next few years with the completion of DL purchases and the Electrification of Auckland Suburban Passenger Network.
