47 GM class locomotives were built for the Commonwealth Railways of Australia, all of which were inherited by CR's successor, Australian National.
Entering service in May 1967, GM46 was the penultimate class member and was photographed at the Mile End diesel depot (Adelaide) on 12 April 1989.
After privatisation in 1997, GM46 carried on in service with Genesee & Wyoming Australia until June 2015, still wearing its former AN livery.
