AK2583 is the AK Track Recording Car with the pantograph fitted to the roof, although this was lowered by the time we caught up to the train for photographs. This is used to test the quality of the OHW in the RailCorp network. Note the jumper cable to permit the operation of the "S" Set motor cars on either end - this is to ensure a continuous circuit throughout the train for many aspects of operation including powering and the vigilance system.
Over the first week of August, 2013, the AK Track Recording Cars made one of their last runs around the Sydney metropolitan rail network. To remove the requirement to use diesel locomotives in the underground (City Circle, Eastern Suburbs, New Southern Railway and Epping to Chatswood Rail Link), trials had previously been conducted using surplus suburban electric rolling stock. Over the week, the AK Cars were operated with two suburban electric motor cars bracketing the set of three track recording vehicles. The consist was C3063/C3982/AKCars/C3044/C3949, with the motor cars at each end marshaled "elephant style".
