New Car Set FN3 and other V/Line fleet changes

The BS cars should remain in service until delivery of the final VL in the new order 3VL50, or TM 1317.

When is this scheduled to occur? Seems a bit of a waste fitting power doors to the S cars when they'll probably be withdrawn in a few years.
"VRfan"

I believe the last of the current V/Lo order is due around 2012. That said, there may be further pax increases, which might necessitate SN7 to hang around even longer.

I can see more V/Los being ordered anyway (or similar intercity train)

Thanks for that SN7

I got a few photos of the set from the Latrobe Street bridge this afternoon; a bit tricky to get decent ones though with the stabled rollingstock in the way!

One imagines when FN3 goes in, it'll come out quicker than the other sets which have been in so far, seeing as it already has power assisted doors fitted!

At least it looks like V/Line have finally settled on a single carriage set livery - the last few sets out are all the same. Laughing

Earlier on it was mentioned that the 'N' carriages from FN1/N4/FN9/VN15 were mooted for the sg gauge. Additionally ACN 21 from SN7 was spoken of. With 15 carriages required, any news on where the other 2 might come from?

IMO they should take the additional N cars required from FN11, may as well do the power-dooring, re-furb, re-paint and gauge conversion all at once while its in the workshops.

Also where do the 3 N cars of FN5 sit in the line for re-paint into new livery? I know N13 is in at the moment, then FN3 next. Perhaps after that? It's probably not important in the scheme of things, but surely sets with one complete livery look better than the current mixed case?

If that's the case, what happens to the BZN's and BTN's from the other sets? Perhaps bundle with the other BCZ for a second interurban only set? Maybe mix and match with some BS cars and have two sets with BS/BCZ/BZN/BTN cars?

If there's no more N cars in SN7, will it cop a name change?

Funny Rob, you should mention that... Thurs. nite when I came back from Melb, I had a FN Set in VLP Mrk III, with BCZ 257 in VLP Mrk II, tacked on the rear to give/gain the required VN Set roster for 8243 & 8220.
Hence, while I was at it, I also took the liberty to enjoy the wide spacious Z Car Seats compared to the so-called ergonomically-designed First Class Seats in the ACN...

The other two carriages could possibly be BN19 ex Kerang and a powervan of some description - to carry bulk bike traffic and in case of HEP failure on an N class loco - PCO2 is the van mooted for SG use I believe.

But anything can happen between now and the commencement of V/Line services on the standard gauge, with a forthcoming state election in this timeframe I would suggest politicians or potential politicitans will make all type of suggestions as to what standard of train will serve North east Victoria.

It would not surprise at all given that there will only be three x 5 car N sets on sg also with three sg N class locos that for reliability of HEP etc especially if services are extended to Wagga that each set will include either a PCJ or PCO powervan . This provides back up HEP if HEP on loco fails , plus plenty of space for luggage etc .

I guess it depends on whether the space in the ACN is enough for luggage carried by pax on long distance trips like this (since naturally, they tend to take more than on commuter interurban routes).

I haven't seen that model of "Shu-Roo" before but I think I've seen an earlier less streamlined model on a utility belonging to either RailCorp or Pacific National in Goulburn some years ago.

This is obviously an electrically powered device intended to generate a high frequency sound (above human hearing) to cause kangaroos to move away from the train well ahead of its arrival.

I wonder how effective it is on cars doing 110 km/h let alone on trains at 160 km/h. Even though the doppler effect would raise the frequency as heard by the kangaroo, I'd wonder if the volume would be adequate at the sort of range required for the animal to get clear.

The Countrylink Explorers have a similar but simpler device, small air operated venturi whistles, about 50 mm long and maybe 20mm in diameter on small base pedestals. These can be mounted on the Scharfenberg coupler or on the small ledge that allows cleaning of the cab window. I've seen up to four of these on the end of the car, but usually on those used on the Broken Hill train.

Since the Broken Hill train runs with a cover over the Scharfenberg coupler to protect it from animal impacts, I guess the whistles aren't that effective either.

ShuRoo promotes a 400m range, which on a VLocity travelling at 160km/h, gives the kangaroos 9 seconds of high-pitch sound before the unit passes

BCZ 259 seems to be seeing use with a FN set on the 1500 down Marshall service. It gains points for being an WCR orphan, but loses them for the seats not rotating. Evil or Very Mad

"574M"

Yes they are... The white doors forms part of the DAA Visibility Guidelines specifications Shocked  Although perhaps they would have been been painted Yellow Mr. Green  like the vast majority of the Cityrail fleet &  CLK XPT's/XPL's Doors post the recent refurb. (apart from the designated crew entry doors of course, which are solid silver)...

On second thoughts  ConfusedNeutral Yellow on this "very british" VLP Mrk III Scheme would look disastrous... Mwa ha ha ha!Spew

The first N and H set refurbished didn't have the white band at window level, but had the windows frames painted white instead of grey. The first H set was initially released with grey window frames, being painted soon after entering service.

BZN262 entered revenue service today with FN19 and N471 to make a five car consist for the footy this afternoon, however the down departure from Southern Cross was delayed by 30mins account of no water being available to ACN and BZN262 having door errors. Tough BZN262 will probably be like BZN267 and remain a loose car until assigned to a set.
