Whilst working for a particular rail company back in 2004/2005 the company had a management love in where they were working out how to save on running costs. The solution...SPEND LESS ON SCHEDULED AND PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE!
However, fast forward six months...massive loco reliability issues, cancelled trains, irate crews, maintenance cost rising.
All of a sudden the company ditched their spend less mentality and started pumping money back into the locos and they continued to do it and solved alot of their issues. They then when down the path of driver fuel saving strategies and found they saved more money that way even with the money they were spending on maintenance.
Jump ahead to today and the company that I currently work with have a different issue in that they have no real workshop to do work out of, and are limited in their access to their third party service providers workshop.
Makes for some interesting drives when trains end up fully laden with traction motors cut out due to poor communication. It certainly means you have to know how to manage your train running and know where you are on track!
