A TRAIN has derailed at Pyramid Hill causing disruption to V/Line services.

A V/Line spokesperson said buses would replace trains between Swan Hill and Bendigo until further notice.

The spokesperson said it wasn't a V/Line train that derailed and that the extent of damage was unknown until engineers assessed the track.

According to the Bendigo Advertiser, the train was carrying 200,000 tons of grain. That's a superb effort by a BL, a P, and an A even on flat ground ! Rolling Eyes

Cool coincidence - to me anyway. I was looking for graffiti ideas for my HO scale VHGF wagons and photographed these three locos.

From the accident ...

My pic from last Saturday night - sorry taken with a telephone ...

Well it's no wonder V/Line are saying train services are suspended until further notice. Bit of a mess.
Latest word is that it was a track fault and that it will take about 9 days to sort out (500 metres of track damaged):

Shocked

I've seen some more photos:

P22's last axle is off the rails, and some of those wagons are bent like banannas!!!

I count around 6 or so wagons which look to be completely totaled. Nasty.

The only beneficiaries will be the local birds and mice - the original meals on wheels has arrived.

If the rumours circulating about the cause being due to a broken rail, what claim if any could PN have on vline for the state of the track?

If it was a broken rail, probably better that a grainy discovered it rather than a pass at line speed??

That was going to be my next point.  This is a serious flaw in the network.  Given it was a PN service and there could be half a million in wagon write-offs who do they claim against?

Does a broken rail mean poor maintenance?

Why do rails break?

At a high level, the breaks are caused by changes in the rail metallurgy exposing a weak point where the fracture occurs. This then leads into asking why do the weak spots occur. Can be star cracking from fishplate joins (if rail isn't welded), hammering effect from flat wheels or localised brittleness from wheelspins imparting high levels of heat to very specific areas.

From seeing it first hand around 4-6 am it was pretty horrible. i'd say at least 12 wagons are write offs.

A friend who is a very regular user of the train was advised 2 weeks to reopening.

I've just seen A78 depart Bendigo heading down the Swan Hill line direction through Nth Bendigo junction.
I'm guessing it is going to help with the recovery etc?

cheers

It travelled up there to collect the wagons that were trapped behind those that derailed, I caught it shut down after returning them to Bendigo Yard and attaching the three that were bought back last week
