More excellent stuff, interesting to see X wagons and 21 over on the AN side of the yard, would've taken them a fair while to "tip" a train but I guess they didn't have much of a choice at the time!

"DRR_Fireman"

cant remember exactly how things went ,looking at my photos it seems that the big trains might have stopped around the same time.so it was alot of eratic smaller running.AN had to supply the shunters to escort the train across to the wharf and i know they did a fair amount of damage to the wagons when emptying them manualy.pity i dont have the original prints as they might have more info on them....at least the dates!
have never seen any photos of what went on inside the shed
if you talk to some of the older bulk handlers they should remember most of the details.

I fluffed up on the second image, the head loco cut out due to a tree. Damn it.

I wasn't thinking i would see a train, specially on a Saturday. The very observant girlfriend did though!

Great photos Jeffrey, I have a photo of single Z2 with 29 log wagons on plus van before the carrying capacity of the log wagons were lowered from 50 tonnes to 45 tonnes just about to cross the Henry street bridge. Its a great contrast. Today between Rocherlea to Bell Bay there were about 15+ full log trucks going to the chip mill.  There could be more capacity for Tasrail if the opportunity were to arise.

Agreed, apart from the odd car basically all I passed between Launceston and Georgetown was log truck after log truck.

the old water wheel and pump from guilford , my understanding this was originaly  going to be done up and reinstalled . it just disappeared so i take it might have been scrapped.

a few from inveresk rail yards..
when playing sport in lonny i'd always manage to give them a visit and have a wonder around, not a securiy gate or person anywhere ,it was still a bit of a time capsule even in the 80's .back in the days when vandalism wasnt a national pastime....

talking about the log traffic
my old neigbour drove a b double log truck.he was saying that a day for him was two trips to aurther river to the hampshire chip mill.now this was a brand new b double so with loan repayments and maintenance the grand profit for the day was $40.00 .........why would they bother.
until they can get companys to compete realistically then tasrail really cannot compete with the trucking industry, especially logging.
the company he worked for went broke not that long after we talked about it... worked out they didnt pay super for the emplyees so really they carted the loggs for nothing....

x30 sits outside st marys station. this was i think about a week after the delivery , if you had a starter handle you could have started it up and drove it back to fingal.one of the memories that stand out on this trip was one of the side roads that had been repaved over the tracks not far from st marys where the loco was literally driven over the asphalt (completely left the rails) and dropped back onto the rails on the other side.
and what a waste as it was the x in the best condition , would be nice to see it in going condition.......
