I've got a flight leaving Sydney (Canberra via Melbourne) this Sunday and my travel ticket lists to be in T2, previously I've travelled to Domestic for T3, but I'm not quite sure if I'm able to travel to Domestic station and navigate to T2?

This is only my second time leaving the state, so I'm quite confused and want to take the train from Canley Vale and change at Glenfield for the airport train.

Also an off topic question since I'm travelling Canberra via Melbourne with 50 minutes connection at Melbourne for Canberra, do I have to wait for my baggage at the carousel print a new ticket (since I received one of those e-tickets), remove all the existing stickers and replaster them and load them on the new flight again? Again I'm quite new to domestic travel! What does this all mean about departures and arrivals at MELB, does that mean I have to walk outside of MELB and re-enter in departures?

Hi,

T3 and T2 are both at the Domestic platform.  When you reach the top of the escalators and look at the signs I think T2 is right and T3 is left.

In Melbourne your bags will go through from one flight to the other IF you are on the same carrier.  If not just ask when you put your bags in.

When I travel for a flight from Macarthur I always catch the train 2 hours before depature and that gets me there on time.  Not sure about Canley Vale but going through Glenfield does make a lot of sense.

Question:  Why fly when you can catch a train from Campbelltown? not sure but could be about the same time as going through Melbourne.

Which airline/s are you flying with - that will determine your connection procedures in Melbourne. If you're flying with Qantas, for example, you'll receive Boarding Passes for both legs when you check-in in Sydney and your baggage will be transferred to your Canberra flight without you needed to do anything about it.

Domestic Station's exit is in the middle of the passenger underpass between T2 and T3, so it's really just a case of going in the opposite direction, and of course it's all signed.

I've never actually connected through Melbourne so I'm not sure of the procedures for airside transfer. Tullamarine or Avalon?

Can I ask though - why not just direct to Canberra, either by plane or Countrylink service?

Some extra information;

- I'm attending my Officer Selection Board as a RAAF Officer in Canberra, the flights are all paid for the by ADF I have no reason why they chose this very long (and expensive $620) route!

- The airline throughout the journey will be V-Australia.
- Connection for Canberra is listed as 'Melbourne, Australia' on my ticket
I've decided to be at Domestic at least 1.5-2 hours before the flight departs as it is better to be earlier than late for a flight!

Not strictly rail related but important nevertheless...
I had a relative who was in the Army for a short time. They flew him home for holidays during the recruitment / initial phase. Apparently this is standard. All his colleagues were flown home to their place of residence and in one case that meant Canada (where the recruit's parents had just moved).

There's money to be saved there!

Oh I see. Virgin worked the same way as Qantas last time I flew with them - both Boarding Passes at initial check-in and baggage carried right through.

If you don't get any better information from us for the transfer in Melbourne just get in and ask or see what happens; the worst that can happen is that you'll need to come out of Arrivals and head upstairs to go through security again.

The Army do occasionally send people by rail (or did, anyway) - I remember several years ago a family member took part in the big joint exercises in Townsville and was sent home to Brisbane on the Tilt Train.

Exit Domestic station and follow signs to T2 rather than T3. It's just a left turn rather than a right turn after exiting the station ticket hall.

Pack in plenty of float time.

You should be handed boarding passes for both flights when checking in at Sydney. Your baggage should be checked through. Upon arrival at Melbourne, after deplaning, find out which gate your Canberra flight departs from and proceed directly to it.

You should not need to go landside in Melbourne.

Be faster to use a bus from Sydney to Canberra too, never mind cheaper.

You should not need to go landside in Melbourne.

Depends, Virgin operate from two piers at MEL, and if the onward flight is departing from a different pier to the arriving flight, then there will be a need to re-clear security. It is a lousy setup in that terminal, and security needs to be moved.

It is a right royal PITA, the lounge is before security as well, so you need to leave the lounge early enough to allow for any delays, unlike the Qantas Club where you can leave it until the flight is on final call.

Now that's a problem, for one simply does not leave the lounge before the very last call.
