    Why does the Geelong service in stage 4 end at South Yarra? why does the South Morang go via new tunnel - should it be now Doncaster go via the new tunnel and leave South Morang go via Jolimont?

    A. Because there is spare line capacity created by the metro tunnel & the rerouting of the werribee line to the Glen Waverly & Alamein lines.
    (although Geelong trains will be sharing tracks with the Upfield/Sandringham on the 'new' viaduct)

    B. 'cos there will be significantly more South Morang (Mernda) trains than there will ever be Doncasters.
    So makes sense to have them flood the new tunnel with services.

    According to the report South Morang will go by the new tunnel to eliminate the at grade conflict at Clifton Hill, and the Geelong service will end at South Yarra so passengers can change trains there instead of at Footscray or Sunshine.

    I fail to see the point in building an expensive tunnel from Clifton Hill to Southern Cross when there is already a reservation along the Inner Circle. The line can branch between Merri and Rushall then join  the Upfield line just down of Royal Park and run via the easternmost RRL tracks into Southern Cross.

    Is this plan ever going to happen? $8b blown on a tollway isn't going to leave a lot to do any rail infrastructure...

    As much as I would like  to see some of things in the plan happen, given the current governments pro road eg another road tunnel most this report will end in PTV archives.  The Labor government came under attack for producing plans and brochures and guess what the current government is doing.

    It is interesting that nobody has picked up on the concept of an outer circle railway eg from Frankston to Ringwood via Dandenong to all for easier travel without going via the city.  The Smart Bus is a good idea, put it get delayed from heavy traffic.

    This is, apart from the suggestion to use the RRL lines at Southern Cross, the most sensible idea. With the opening of the RRL lines the UP East Suburbans will have two tracks heading towards southern cross. The Clifton Hill / City Circle viaduct lines could be routed via 8 (as well as the existing 9) at Southern Cross. The direction of the loop does not need to change, only problem will be an at grade junction at Royal Park. (Oh, and the nimbys ajoining the outer circle)

    I agree that the nimbys could be a major stumbling block - but I am sure all the main roads intersecting the route would need to be grade separated - adding to the bill.  That includes three tram lines.

    Should that be INNER circle?  But I agree that the existing reservation could/should be used, one way or another, in preference to building a tunnel along much of the same route.  One thing to watch would be if Seymour line services ever get re-routed via Upfield.

    Oops, my bad. Yes, should be the inner circle, Thanks for the correction. Yes, all the crossings would need to be grade separated therefore the whole line would probably end up in a big long cutting. Less expensive than a tunnel I guess, but in this state....
