The Seymour and Shepparton lines are closed today following bushfires at Craigieburn and Wallan. This comes after the Geelong line was shut down for an hour or so surrounding a fire at Little River.

Currently sitting in a very dead 6:20 Swan Hill train behind Calder Raceway. Waiting on a locomotive to come up from Spencer St to push us to Digger's Rest, where buses are waiting.

Going to be a very long night...

Are you on the UP service ?

Isn't the line beyond Watergardens bi-directional? Single-line running on the East Track could at least allow you to run a train every 30 minutes in each direction, however Metro and V/Line have announced buses to replace trains.

Nope only an up and down line between Watergardens and Sunbury.

Sorry, my battery died.

I was on a down service.
The loco arrived about 9PM and we were pushed to Digger's Rest and were put on buses around 9:30. Got to Malmsbury 10:50.
The Swan Hill train normally arrives at Malmsbury at about 7:50PM.

Train staff were originally going to let us alight using ladders, but changed their minds as it was getting dark.

Anyone know what is going on down this direction tonight (between South Geelong and Marshall)? I have only seen two trains go past tonight and I think in is the same train going up and down. It was a N Class hauling an H set.

As a result of a signal failure and a defective 3 car set, the normally 18:25 down Ararat was last night (4/4/14) reduced to 3 cars, an express bus to Ballarat and no doubt a few who arrived early for the next 19:25 Ballarat train. So when it left 20" late it was quite cosy, with many standing.

Picking up along the way didn't help matters and added to the crowd. I had a seat but many other middle aged and older did not. However the driver got a good run to Sunshine and a good run to Melton saw us gain 5 mins.

The pax that alighted at Melton more than made up the number of seats required so all the standees got a seat.

It's amazing, like Pakenham, the shortest distance pax have no intention of giving up their seats to the older and less able-bodied pax.

Are vline so short of rolling stock they could not find 3 free vlocity cars in Melbourne ?

I guess this is the problem with Ararat. Might there been a loco hauled set available in years gone that would have worked fine but you can not run around at Ararat on BG any longer.

Another reason to convert the entire network to SG which should have been completed years ago.

"freightgate"

The rolling stock shortage has been a problem for quite some time. It is not helped by the fact that a large number of peak services stable overnight at the terminuses leaving a very small pool of spare cars in Melbourne in the evening. Occasionally Sprinters will replace a VLocity on evening services but it is very rare for a loco-hauled train to run in lieu of a DMU.

I once recall the 17:29 Marshall flagship running as 3 cars instead of 7 account two defective VLocity units. That was a cozy one Shocked I believe it is not uncommon for the Bacchus Marsh push-pull trains to be split in half when there is a defect in one of the P classes. Since building up all H sets to 6 car, I'm not sure if this still happens.

About 8pm tonight I was having a look at the V/Line website that listed the Bendigo line with minor disruptions and the 17:51 Southern Cross to bendigo service as running late and then being changed to Bus from Kyneton.
Also the 18:20 SC to Swan Hill train was listed as 25 mins late.
In Castlemaine at around 20:15 I heard an N on a pass head north and gathered it had made a bit of time up, but just before 20:30 another N on a pass also heading north called in.
At 21:25 the 1st N returned heading south which is unusual. Again checking the V/line website the 20:38 out of Bendigo was listed as 20 minutes late, so I gather this loco hauled train replaced a defective V/locity.
I haven't heard any V/locities pass thru Castlemaine since about 19:00, but a freight went north at 21:45.

Last sunday while coming home from Melbourne there were signal problems between Taradale and Castlemaine which made our train about 30 mins late.

Cheers, Murray

I was on that 17:51 Bendigo train. There was a problem with the points at Sunshine where we were misdirected to Platform 4 (and the Ballarat line). We waited at Platform 4 until the next Bacchus Marsh train arrived, which was sent to Platform 2 (and the Bendigo line) Passengers then swapped trains, and we continued on to Bendigo using the former Bacchus Marsh train, which was an N loco pulling a set of H carriages.

The conductor advised we were only going as far as Kyneton, where we would change to buses, however a short while later she advised the train would go all the way to Bendigo, which it did. I had forgotten how bouncy those old H carriages were.

I suspect the second N you heard was the Swan Hill train.

Does anyone know why last night's 6.42 Broadmeadows service to Albury was held at Wangaratta for 45 mins? All passengers were told was they were waiting for police to give the ok to proceed due to an "incident". Police were seen at Springhurst station checking maps.

Correspondent AWCar may be interested to know that A W Carr was the captain of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club in the early 30's. He had Larwood and Voce in his team, and is credited with being the man who actually invented Bodyline bowling. Jardine learnt it from Carr, and then used it in Australia.
