The Tulloch (1200 class) railcars - Where are they today?

  Campaspe Junior Train Controller

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the ten Tulloch built 1200 class railcars originally built for the "Riverina Express" are located today.

Below is my understanding, but it is incomplete and I think that a few things have changed since I compiled this list.

PCH 1221 - ARHS (ACT)
PCH 1222 - State Mine, Lithgow (Once owned by OzBack Explorer)
PCH 1223 - Cowra Fun Museum, Mid-Western Highway, Cowra (No bogies and the interior has been stripped)
PCH 1224 - Sold to the Victorian Railways in 1974 and became DRC 42. Currently stored at Newport Workshops in Melbourne along with DRC 41.
PCH 1225 - State Mine, Lithgow (Once owned by OzBack Explorer)
PCH 1226 - Sold to Queensland Rail in 1994 (Current position unknown)
PCH 1227 - Sold to the Victorian Railways in 1974 and became DRC 43. Current location unclear, but might be at Seymour.

PCR 1201 - Ownership and location unknown.
PCR 1202 - Sold to Queensland Rail in 1994 (Current position unknown)
PCR 1203 - Ownership and location unknown.

Any update on the ownership, location and condition would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Regards

The car at ARHS is apparently privately owned.

The two QR cars were reported on the ground at Woodstock (Qld) a couple of years ago.

The two cars formerly at State Mine were sold to a well known railwayman and are on his property near Parkes.

I've not seen any reports of 1201 or 1203, if anyone knows of their existence please tell us.

Thanks for the feedback to date.  Does anyone know the location within Woodstock where these two cars are located?

That'd be it Graham, they have been there over 10 years or so now. There is also 1 Aurora type car still there, the other disapearded a couple of years ago.

I can vaguely recall having to go down and look at what I'm sure was 1201 at Eveleigh in 1993, I remember the fire-damaged Budd was there as well (BRT1181?). I'm certain it was scrapped with the Budd cars.

I've never managed to confirm the location or existence of 1203.

Slightly OT, but why would QR buy them?  They'd be OOG, surely?

Someone who did not know better went to the sale and bought some sleeper carriages and two Tulloch cars at bargain prices.

Well they were sitting cars weren't they?

OOG, what's that, ignorance is as they say bliss, sorry but I forgot to ask someone who knew about these things
.

Not much a bargain as was originally thought and in this case wasted money.

The coaches were bought to replace the Inlander as "there were no clearance issues with running them on the Great Northern Railway, Mount Isa line to you southeners.

Well the idea tuned out to be not practical and the rest as they say is history, except the person involved went on to greater heights of achievement as is usual in these cases.

And we are still waiting for replacement cars which now seems as likely as droppings from a wooden horse.

Sorry about the digression, as Draffa said slightly OT but I felt I could not help myself but reply.

So someone screwed up royally and got promoted in spite (or because) of it?  Sounds a lot like my workplace too... :

BRT1181 was cut up at Eveleigh. It reportedly was the only non-powered BUDD RDC ever built.

The two sleepers that QR purchased were FAM cars.

Sounds like a tenured public servant had to get promoted out of harm's way.

QR apparently bought 2 x LAN, 3 x FAM and 2 x 1200.
The two LAN and two FAM were eventually brought to Rothbury, and I believe scrapped last year.
One FAM remains at Woodstock.
I don’t know what became of the Tulloch railcars.

The main problem was that the coupler heights were different to the Qld narrow gauge cars and it was decided it was not worth the trouble of sorting the problem out. Big deal. QR probably got their money back when they on sold them.

The only car I knew that was cut up last year was FAM 2387.

Both Tulloch railcars at Woodstock are still there as of March this year.
