I don't understand the question? Railpage gets information from its users, some of whom work for various railway companies, others who liaise with people who work for those companies. It is possible to get information from all kinds of sources, and how Railpage gets that information isn't important.

The fact that the information is publically accessible and hosted by Railpage is important, and we should all be grateful for the work that goes into sourcing and publishing this information.

Might I suggest not looking a gift horse in the mouth?

4trak is a nationwide train tracking system, that is either operator specific or showing all trains, depending on the username and password used.

It only works for trains with a Countrynet or ICE radio, as I understand it. So suburban and V/Line trains do not show up.

Some of you may get some entertainment value out of my web site, which I am developing mainly to keep the grey matter active in my retirement. I am an avid rail fan too and have travelled all these routes and love train ops. The url is  www.jgtech.info

Don't they provide one for city services? I've still got to put the Canberra services into this one! Then I was going to do Qld and Vic regional. It is quite a tedious exercise to use the timetables for this. It  would be much easier if real time coordinates were  available, but then the railways themselves could do a much better site with them.

hey that would be cool.  link it to the locations pages and you could look up the location as the train passed.  better still have a system where when the train passes locations already in the rp system you get a pop-up on the bottom right announcing this!

Are these locations pages the ones on the Railpage site? Do I understand that you are saying that the locations info could be shown as a train passes the location?

i think that would be great. but also if you could send out a pop up on the Railpage screen when a train was passing a location that is good.

thinking more about actions and updates what about as actions are performed on Railpage a popup happens with a link.  like new location has been added and the link pops up on the lower right hand side of the page. a little bit like facebook. (mmm sorry)

is this possible?

That's an excellent bit of work. Well done.

If you haven't already seen it, ARTC's SWTT is online if you wanted to incorporate freighters into it as well. Your average wheatie probably isn't a good example, but certainly intermodal jobs that run to a table should be easily implemented if you so choose.

Gunning for comedian of the year?

In seriousness but, with the exception of Saturdays and Wednesdays that's not such a bad idea. I would be putting a disclaiming about being only an estimate but, because if you couldn't tell it does happen on occasion that intermodal runs off its path.

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

Railway enthusiast friends 'in the know' tell me that the freight TT is really a guide to possible paths and trains do not follow the timetable very well. My aim is to get as near as possible to real time running. Hopefully the authorities may one day produce their own precise site for real time running. Having said that I believe some freighters like the north coast steel train usually keep to pretty good tim and I may include them. Also, although I can convert the ARTC pdf TTs very well to excel but there are lot of inconsistencies and a lot of trains so it is a very big task.

Nice work with the tracker site. Is something I had been thinking about doing with whats publically available on ARTC.

Years ago when I holidayed in Switzerland I stumbled across a site where a guy had done this dort of thing with the SBB timetsble, but actually using Google maps. Always wondered how to get that to work.

I think that response indicated that CTLS, the old analog system, has long gone.

Last time I looked 4Trak was still there, although it does fall over at times.

Google Chrome doesn't like the internal routines in 4Trak and won't connect you. Internet Explorer (any version) seems to work.

I picked up quite a nice 4Tel Coffee Cup at Ausrail.... Means nothing to my work colleagues...

Not quite true.

4trak requires Java, which in turn leverages NPAPI in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, et al. NPAPI is a fundamentally flawed and insecure API, and the code required to run it has been removed from Chrome. I understand that Firefox and the rest are not far behind in removing support for NPAPI.

Internet Explorer uses ActiveX, which remains supported. However, starting with Windows 10 Internet Explorer is an optional extra, and is not installed by default across every SKU (but remains present for machines upgrade to Windows 10). Its replacement, Edge, does not support extensions at all at this time, and when it does they will not be ActiveX-based. In terms of versioning, IE9 and below are unsupported by Java/Oracle, and if it's working for you it's by sheer dumb luck.

So, with Java finally dying the death it's long deserved, it remains to be seen just how useful 4trak will be in the future. Why on earth this system was built using smeg Java in the first place is beyond me.

It's not a case of Chrome not liking "the internal routines" - 4Trak was built around obsolete and fundamentally insecure technologies.
