Wagon question

  ssaunders Chief Train Controller

All, a wagon question from a Vic.

Was looking at some maps and could see Mt Gibson hauling into Geraldton and wondered what wagons Mt Gibson uses, I see Aurizon locos and they do the hauling but wondered about narrow gauge ore wagons as I don't remember even seeing a pic of one. (all the pics on the Mt Gibson site only show the loco head on which was ARG when the pic taken)

Thanks in advance guys if any of you know.

I believe Mt Gibson uses married pairs of curved side hopper wagons, smaller versions of the wagons developed for use at Whyalla. These are used on a number of services out of Geraldton, but some trains use rotary dump gondola wagons, smaller versions of those used in the Pilbara.

The Hopper wagons are also generally similar to the larger wagons now being used by Mineral Resources from the Yilgarn to Perth.

Thanks for all that, good pics and info. Extra question, who owns all that, the mining company or the rail company.

Thanks again.

The original Mt gibson hoppers type MHAF were a new design for them. They were susequently puchased by the now AUIRIZON. The MHAFs were designed to be carried by rail on China Rail std flat wagons and to fit through tunnels with-out an "out-of-gauge movement". These "movements easily double and treble the freight rate. The hoppers were built at Zhuzhuo for CIMC (Qiqihar refused to build them as they were trying to hold space for another larger customer who did not eventuate for a few more years). The wagons went by barge to Shanghai. Mt Gibson ordered more and so did AURIZON and these became the slightly larger AHCFs. Zhuzhuo then sold some to Mid-West thru their Chinese connections and they paid much more for them. They have been beaut little wagons. One could say that the Whyalla wagons and now the Min Resources hoppers are further developments.

Didn't the original batch of Whyalla hoppers built at Port Augusta come first?

The Chinese built Whyalla hoppers came later...
