Local commuter Damian Wicks, a professional analyst by trade, told The CourierBallarat commuters were being “royally shafted”.
That is a bit harsh. Is Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat not in the same zone? is that the issue?
After looking at the Myki zone map, there are a number of V/Line stations with multiple zones attached.
- Bacchus Marsh 2/3
- Lara 2/3/4
- Riddells Creek 2/3
If you're happy to break your journey and wait for the next train, then you can save money.
Myki theoretically always charges the lowest fare, so if, for example, you come from Ballarat to Southern Cross and change at Bacchus Marsh, the fare should be zones 8 Ballarat to 3 Bacchus Marsh touch off + z2 Bacchus Marsh touch on to 1.
The issue is that is a lot cheaper to purchase both a Ballarat - Bacchus marsh and a Bacchus Marsh - Melbourne ticket than it is to purchase a Ballarat - Melbourne ticket. This has been case for a long time
