New rail hub for Wodonga as Victorian rail freight expansion gets $39m investment

    The word up here is traffic into the new terminal will be jibbed from Laverton and therefore relies on an expansion at the Laverton site.

    Drove past the new rail hub along the Hume this morning and by the looks the sidings are joined up to the main line each end as a SCT Loco was sitting just outside the shed on the Wodonga end and two SCT wagons on the Southern end of the shed.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

    As luck would have it CSR002 as train 6708 ix currently on its way south from the site having just passed Benalla presumably heading to Laverton.  Monitoring the cameras at Albion.

    No mention of these runs in the 16th October ARTC timetable... will they be timetabled? Or as-required?
    I wonder if they'll run on weekends?

    The CSR will come close to passing G522 waiting near Keilor. Would be a good shot!

    5MC2 is now trundling its way north from Tottenham also... congestion much?

    Thanks Allan - my education is now complete.
    I thought that 'jibbed' was related to 'gibberish' but this is, apparently, not so despite the prevalence of both on Railpage.

    Sorry for the late reply, the site manager at Barnawatha states they are flat out, with freights to and from Brisbane (4 per week), Perth, Melbourne and a shuttle to Melbourne docks. They appear to be offering an "end to end" service, ie they will pick up or deliver items to/from the terminal, be it pallet or container loads. SCT states they have 5 kiilometres of sidings within the terminal also it appears they have an X class on site to do any shunting required as nearly all there photos of the terminal has an X class in the shot.

    Note: The private operators had been begging for rail access for Wodonga logistics for MANY years, successive state governments had been ignoring there requests. So its nice to see its now doing so well, so much for government "expertise"!

    Truly wonderful news @woodford and a great update.

    SCT really have their act together and I can't wait to see how the terminal growth continues.

    4 trains per week to/from Brisbane and locals from Melbourne but how many wagons are they processing would you say in a week?

    As far as I can see this is just further proof that if you build it they will come. Subsidy or no, SCT have clearly worked out the economies of scale that make this sort of operation possible.

    This corridor has so much potential - nearly half the population of Australia is served by it. Inland Rail is a step in the right direction but Victoria and NSW need to agree on a 30-year strategy to transform it along the lines of the great American mainlines. The SCT terminal is proof that traffic could quadruple with a few well-placed investments.

    oh im not disagreeing with the terminal - im on this site and im pretty sure you all know my basic positions Wink  just that it has come at a cost. Its part of a broader funding discussion and market function discussion i guess.  Ie how you set up markets so you dont need subsidies.

    The government has promised so many terminals and delivered very few.   Cranbourne, GIFT, Ballarat West, Wyndham Vale to name a few have all not gone ahead when there is the opportunity to move from truck to rail.  Hopefully the Port Shuttles will eventually come but not holding my breath.

    Yeah but it shouldn't be government's responsibility to build terminals i think.  Especially if there is no demand.  What would be worse, an unbuilt terminal that could exist, or a built terminal that has no demand (Ie white elephant)??

    The SCT and Horsham experience proves to me that inland terminals work.  Consider Fletchers at Dubbo and Albury Terminal.  All busy.
