CLP4, X53, G516 & G534 - 1SM9 - January 2008

  Bevan Wall Deputy Commissioner

On this day ten years ago, Sunday January 20th, 2008, QRN train no.1SM9, hauled by CLF4, X53, and freshly painted G516 & G534, was running via the Illawarra due to track work around Picton. The weather forecast was predicting clear skies in the Southern Highlands, a friendly crew had agreed to put the streamliner on the front, and after recording the climb up Como bank the plan was to capture scenes of the train blasting up through Dombarton followed by some more shots in beautiful late afternoon summer light of the run across from Ocean View to Moss Vale and then on up through Exeter.
You can imagine the frustration when, out of nowhere, a classic summer afternoon thunder storm developed dropping a deluge around Helensburgh. The sky cleared as quickly as it had darkened, but the damage had been done, with flash flooding closing the line around Otford and bringing 1SM9 to halt at Waterfall, where it sat until well after sunset.
Here are some scenes of this now classic combo recorded before the weather turned feral.
