Central Station - Former Interstate Booking Office

  Campaspe 2 Junior Train Controller

During October / November 2017, the mural located in the former Interstate Booking Office at Central Station was cleaned following the fire that closed this area back in September 2015.

Since late 1999, this area had been occupied by a bakery and a fast food outlet (The fire that closed the area started in the fast food outlet).

Does anyone know what Sydney Trains plans to do with this area given that they have gone to the trouble of cleaning the mural?

Will it once again be used as a catering outlet and when will it be re-opened to the public?

Also, does anyone know when this area ceased to be used as an Interstate Booking Office(I think that it was sometime between 1972 and 1976)?

Thanks

I seem to recall booking a ticket in there to travel on the MEX in late 1990.

The old Interstate office was closed prior to 1969, and was moved to the opposite end of Sydney Booking Office. The current walkway between the old office and the country booking office was the V I P room and the Man In Blue and Enquiry Office. The walkway at the other end was where the Interstate office was moved to, until it was closed and absorbed into the main booking office. If you are going through this walkway and look on the left hand wall about 2/3rds of the way through, you will see a panel that does not match the rest of the wall, this was the doorway from the interstate office into the booking office staff meal room and toilets, which is now taken up by the mens public toilet.
Another interesting point is that out back of where Hungry Jacks was is a stairway that leads up to the old mezzanine level above the main booking office, which was closed in by a false ceiling when the office was rebuilt in the 60s. If you go to records.nsw.gov.au and enter booking office sydney central station you will see before and after photos of the main booking office.

Ah, OK, my visit must have been to the replacement then - Interstate was I think at the Western end of the rest.

There was an announcement in late 2017 that expressions of interest had been called for the establishment of new catering facilities across that area and the old country booking office, with the latter intended to be a quality restaurant. We'll see what transpires.

Anywhere would have to be better than the old Ref Room located above the Men's Toilets you could smell 3 platforms away.
I often wondered if that was why there was so many Flower Sellers on the Ramp up from Eddy Avenue?

In the short term...

1. the old Booking Hall (ie; the area between the two walkways to the light rail) is to become a licensed restaurant.

2. the former Dining Area (ie: former Hungry Jacks "flame" grill, cafe and licenced area in the north-east corner) is to be refitted as a cafe, convenience food store and food outlet.

Above are from documents publicly available from the City of Sydney. (downloadable from website, look for development applications and approvals). These have been approved.

In the longer term (2025 -> concept only & subject to approval)...

1. the upper levels of the Grand Concourse building will become a 180-room boutique five-star hotel.

2. the area where the light rail terminus is (outside the old Booking Hall / Grand Concourse) will become the vehicle turnaround and pedestrian access for the Hotel. (Plebs keep out!)

3. the light rail will be shifted to Pitt Street.

4. three towers of up to 40 storeys above the Lee Street bus terminal / layover.

5. the Railway Square YHA will go for three commercial towers. (stuff the backpackers & pleb tourists! - they can go somewhere else)
