I'm wanting to model the concrete loading stage/ complex of the Ivanhoe Colliery at Portland NSW from the mid 60's and looking for any photos, plans or links which could assist me in my research. Thanks heaps.
Is this one of the 2 Collieries located along what is now the Castlereagh Highway between Mt Piper and Cullen Bullen? This is really helpful information gordon s1942. Thank you very much. It is the collieries between Mt Piper and Cullen Bullen. I am helping a good mate with his Mudgee line so this is one of the sidings on route to give us various rail traffic. I will do a bit more google searching under the names you've given me. Terrific! Thanks heaps again gordon.
There was Invincible and Ivanhoe which I believe was run by Austen and Butta and loaded by road firstly at Wallawang Colliery then at what is today called the Lidsdale Loader on part of the Wallerawang Colliery Triangle.
This loading facility was built by Austen and Butta, my late Father-in-Law worked on it for 'Cash in Hand' payments over several weekends.
Both pits are in an area called Hunts Creek and back in the 70's a proposal was put forward to build a Rail loop to service those 2 pits and one at Cullen Bullen but it never eventuated.
I believe the connection to the Mudgee Branch was to be a kilometre or so on the Portland side of Cullen Bullen Station.
I am sure there has been talk of late of the possibility of that pit reopening.
……. already been discussed (about ten years ago). Thanks heaps C3526blue and dutton bay - great info. Does anyone know of any photos of the concrete coal loader?
Link to Railpage thread -
Has some good links to details of the original Ivanhoe colliery and rail connections near Pipers Flat (if that is the one you are after).
Happy coal mining,
