They are also common in North America. Can be seen along most northern transcontinental lines. They are gas fired, The gas tanks get topped up just before winter and I think operate automatically when needed.Interesting to see them in action though, apparently the UK is in for a big blast of cold in the next week or so after a relatively mild winter.
Bit of a media beat-up really as they have been around for decades and have been quietly doing their bit for years without any media attention.
