Diverted freight through Redfern - April 1999

  Bevan Wall Deputy Commissioner

On this date twenty years ago Redfern station was absolutely the place to be. The goods line between North Strathfield and Homebush was closed, so all freight using the main north was diverted into Sydney yard where the locos were run around, or, in the case of the intermodal trains which were too long for yard, the lead locos were uncoupled and a fresh set that had been waiting in Redfern carriage sidings attached to the other end to continue the journey. The locos which has just been uncoupled then ran to the carriage siding and the process repeated. It is highly unlikely that an operation like this, which really tied up the yard will ever be repeated now.

Absolutely brilliant! I love these trips back in time.

These days the trains either wouldn't run or would go the very long way via Coota/Parkes/Merrygoen.

Just The Tip
In the early 1970s when the Alexandria freight terminal was in use someone forgot to set the road for a freight to enter the yard and off it went through Central Electric, city circle and appeared out from the Goulburn Street tunnels.

Must have been quite a sight at the city circle platforms.

Fantastic video.

At 16:11, the freight train led by NR62 heading down on the up line and appears not to use the crossover onto the down line. Are my eyes deceiving me? Where would have it have crossed back onto a down line?

There is another set of facing points off the country end of Redfern platform 10 .
It is possible that the train was going via the down Illawarra Dive .
