Southern Brisbane connection east west

Just a quick question, has there ever been any consideration of linking somewhere like Ipswich more directly with the Gold Coast? Eg some sort of line from Goodna along the M2/M6 corridor to somewhere like Kingston/Loganholme area?

Theres not a lot of settlement along that corridor but it would provide more direct service to the GC/Ipswich and beyond (and free up some city capacity perhaps?)

And yes, probably low on the priority list but curious to know if its been considered.

Aside from the more southerly route planned for the Inland Rail project I'm not aware of any alternative plans. There are plans to extend the Springfield branch southwest to Yamanto south of Ipswich (or use light rail instead).

There was a plan for a freight line to go from the SG line at acacia ridge or further south, eastwards and then north to the port of brisbane, so freight trains could avoid the suburban area entirely.

That was during the Goss government of the early nineties. When they were building the Mk1 standard gauge link to the port there were two options, either follow the existing corridor with a fly over at Dutton park or a new route which I think was intended to follow roughly the same route as they are now proposing for double stack container access.
The state government went with the existing corridor because it was cheaper and also facilitated 3 foot 6 freight trains from the western line (mainly coal).
