Closed until further notice sounds like a major amount of work. An annual event now with the weather the way it is.

North Queensland wet seasons are generally quite intense - 551mm of rain fell near Ayr in one morning last week. It's a rare year for the Mt Isa and North Coast Lines not to be closed for a week or two.

The damage to the Mt Isa line this time has occurred east of Hughenden in locations that haven't been a problem in the past. Sometimes the rain just falls where it wants to fall.

A Pacific National freight pulled up on a washaway at Prairie Creek, next to the town of Prairie. These trains run with three locos in DP and gross 7,000-tonnes, but thanks to ECP the train pulled up a few inches short of distaster and was able to reverse off the washaway after some deliberation.

As of Tuesday, repair vehicle access to the washouts between Torrens Creek and Prairie was still impossible due to the amount of mud and water still present. That situation may have changed by now - it's likely to take a week or so to finish repairs once access is possible.
