The fact remains it's quicker by far for BG trains to get to the docks than SG on the Murray basin lines. Surely the next step is either standardising and/or adding a third rail (dual gauge) from Maryborough to Gheringhap. Once that is done, then Manangatang & Sea Lake lines can look to be standardised?Tend to agree but reality is that all at once is probably the more capital efficient.
Side question, is there enough space on the Ballarat line for one or two grain trains a night?
If and when MB is EVER completed it will be sg only between Ballarat and Gheringhap that decision already made, and if Government is sensible only sg between Maryborough and Ballarat . Retaining dual gauge just because VLP hate standard gauge train sets is ridiculous. Dual gauge costs more initially in capex and also incurs higher on going track maintenance costs .
With the money saved NOT dual gauging Ballarat - Maryborough one standardizes Wendouree - Ararat allowing V/Locity services to extend beyond Ararat to both Hamilton & Horsham . Five x 2 car sg VL sets maintained and based at Ballarat can run at least Weekdays 3 return trips to Hamilton, Maryborough and Horsham, and 6 return trips to Ararat.
