The opera singer was, of course, Marjorie Lawrence (although the Hollywood biopic would have us believe she came from Winchelsea - and the station shown therein bore little visual resemblance to the real Winchelsea station).  I find it gratifying that we have cultured individuals subscribing to this thread.
. Thanks Faredodger. The opera singer was the dead giveaway - I don't know about "cultured", but I'm certainly an opera lover! I'll be back as soon as I can think of something. (Exits stage left whistling "bella figlia dell amore").

Its a pity Marjorie Lawrence didnt come from Burrumbeet Park Racecourse Junction !!!!

How about Skipton.

But, Valvegear, can you whistle all four parts at once?

Faredodger
Short answer; NO. Check your PM; I'll leave a story there.

Now for the next quiz:-

I was named for an industry whose location was about 330 rail km from mine.

Brunswick Plaster Mills Siding?

I thought that one might well be the obvious answer, but I regret to advise that it is incorrect.

I was named for an industry whose location was about 330 rail km from mine.

Hint 1: The industry location has an active station, with no connection to any other line.

2: Both the industry location, and the quiz location, show the name of the town concerned.

I think I'd better reword the question and hints.

I was a siding named for an industry whose location was a town about 330 rail km from me.

Both locations feature the town's name.

The town's station sees trains but these are limited to this line only; they cannot access any other line.

I existed in the 1950's in the eastern half of the State.

Daylesford Woollen and Worsted Mills Siding (what a mouthful).

Indeed it is the (deep breath!) Daylesford Woollen and Worsted Mills Siding, a few kw north of Sale.

Daylesford station still sees trains from the tourist railway based there, but there's no connection to any other line these days. (The Daylesford branch line, of course, joined the Bendigo line at Carlsruhe in happier times.)

Well done, raudteejaam, it's over to you for the next brain teaser.

Alrighty then:

I am a closed station on an open line.
Evidence suggests that I once may have had a goods yard.
Very little if anything remains of the station, though the town I served (such as it is) remains.

How about Charlton
  raudteejaam Train Controller

You're in the right half of the state, but not Charlton.

raudteejaam
Well with that clue,it certainly narrows the field down so I will say Brim.
  raudteejaam Train Controller

Sorry, not Brim or Charlton.
I am a closed station on an open line.

New Clue: I am closer to Melbourne than either of those two places already guessed.

Bungaree?
  raudteejaam Train Controller

Sorry, not Bungaree, Brim or Charlton.
Charlton is the closest guess geographically - but it's still a distance from there.

No guess has the right line yet.

Let's take a stab at Mitiamo.
  raudteejaam Train Controller

Not Mitiamo, Bungaree, Brim or Charlton.

New Clue: my line is a freight line that sees no passengers.

Heck, have another one: the section of line I am on is between two junctions.

The line could be Ararat - Maryborough.  If so, Avoca is not a town "such as it is", so I will try Elmhurst.
  raudteejaam Train Controller

It is not Elmhurst, nor Mitiamo, Bungaree, Brim or Charlton.
No one has the right line yet. Elmhurst is marginally closer geographically than Charlton as the crow flies.

I'll shift a little and try Bet Bet.
  raudteejaam Train Controller

Not Bet Bet, nor Elmhurst, Mitiamo, Bungaree, Brim or Charlton.
But you are much much closer now!
