Melbourne Airport Rail Link

Being the original old cynic, I'll believe that there'll be a rail line to the airport when I see work actually start. I Have been listening to, and reading about, an airport rail link since the airport itself was under construction.

So have I...but as sure as the sun rises in the east, the Airport rail will be built. The Andrews government is not given to offering core and non-core promises.

Interesting observations and predictions from https://twitter.com/OperationalInc1.

There is a lot of work to be done at Albion.

The airport lines in this design are up and over the locals onto the Jacana Easement.

Definitely given to non-core costings for their promises, though.

Sunshine isn't getting additional track/platforms? If not, putting on my soothsayer's hat, I predict that BG's commute will deteriorate further

I wouldn't put too much credance in that weird chook scratchings.

Sunshine stagion already has the Metro (sunbury) completely separate track and platforms to Vline (bendigo).
Its what RRL delivered.

The choke point is where those 2 merge at Anderson St. The Airport track shown in the official pic is diverged away from that cluster fk.

Been mentioned many times already that the metro/vline merge needs to be moved a lot further north (beyond Albion), plus a few other tidy ups that RRL never finished. Now they have the cash, we can only hope.

cheers

If only the current lot were in power when footy was played at Waverley!

And I'll believe it when I see it. (Incidentally, the sun doesn't always rise in the east; it ranges widely between the summer and winter solstices.)

Waverley was the dumbest sporting decision in decades - no public transport, and perched on top of a hill in the rainfall capital of Melbourne. In those days, the blindingly obvious spot was the empty acres of West Footscray/ North Laverton - flat ground and plenty of it, with an existing railway on the doorstep.

Did we receive in the concept release what is proposed for the airport itself?

This has been my concern for a while in that they will take a cheap option and not have the station integrated with the terminals 1,2,3

Sunshine has been future proofed for an additional track pair for RRL, never for the Airport. Not even sure if RRL will be Quad track as it was originally designed, now that $4B is being wasted on ramming Geelong trains up the smeg of Newport SAS. It doesn't need two new platforms to cater for the Airport, current arrangement will work just fine. It will need modifications when Melton is sparked, whenever that may be...

As for the pretty pictures released, it seems like this is the most sensible and cost effective option of navigating Albion, Ballarat Road and St Albans Road. No further information on extending the RRL track pair for Bendigo which needs to go beyond wherever airport joins the Sunbury line. An additional bridge is required over Anderson Road, or this short section of track is going to get one hell of a work out.
Albion looses some of its car parking, but will gain a bike path and x number of MCGs worth of 'open space' as is all the rage these days. Maybe Albion might even score an upgrade as part of the Airport works, there is a dimly lit subway where foundations for the rail bridge will need to go.

No surprises for anything else, except what they are doing with the other $5B.

There is very little space around Sunshine station itself for anymore platforms, but as others have said, this is fine for now*, as the Airport line can exist on the current suburban line between Sunbury line services.

Down from Sunshine things improve and there is plenty of space West of the current lines from past the new H.V. McKay Bridge.

I suspect the following is what will happen:

1. The Bendigo RRL line will need to be moved, where it currently diverges to the Sunbury line, it will instead slew further to the South West, and run clear past Albion and as far as to where the Sunbury line passes under the M80 Ring Rd, and this is where the Bendigo line should diverge back into the Sunbury line.

No residential property acquisitions would be required, although the old electrical substation at Albion may not be longed for this world.

There is enough space under the Ballarat Rd overpass to fit another track pair, Albion station will lose a fair chunk of its car park though.

2. In the now vacant location that used to be where the Bendigo RRL diverged with the Sunbury line, there will be a new diverge for the new Airport Line. This line will then run parallel and between the Bendigo and Sunbury lines, rising fast to climb over both the Ballarat Rd overpass and the Sunbury line and then it will descend to eventually run at ground level alongside the Albion - Jacana Goods line.

Two new track pairs will need to cross Anderson Rd, so this will require significant bridge works, the Southern most of which will need to be elevated to some degree to provide enough road clearance underneath. This will result in 7 tracks crossing Anderson Rd.

* While Airport and Sunbury line services can fit on this single pair of suburban tracks without too much of a problem, it remains to be seen what happens when Melton and possibly also Wyndham Vale sparks have to squeeze through here also. It would seem, that is being left as a problem for another day.

The same thing was said when they were building the Regional Rail Link through Sunshine, What they come up with depends on how much money get put on the table.

Such as a larger 6 + platform station could be built just South of the existing Sunshine Railway Station, freeing up room for a flying junction, the Ballarat line junction could be put on a broader curve.

The Goods line Junction at Albion should be made a broader curve too.
