Wheel fault found during examination on one set, power supply fault on another set, and today there was/is an issue getting vehicles out of the Bank sidings to dock up.

That's another fine mess you've got us into, Stanley. It just about qualifies for the Inspector Clouseau Efficiency Award.

I did notice that today's midday down Shepparton Pass featured an H set in lieu of the usual N set.

This is odd for a weekend, with only the 3 services to each of Shepparton and Warrnambool, and only the 1 to Bairnsdale, I would of thought N classes would be plentiful, but it seems not.

An interesting FOI article in the Bendigo Addy today.  V/line spent $70000 in the past 18 months on taxis on Bendigo-Swan Hill-Echuca lines for passengers stranded by cancelled trains:

I did see the headline of a similar story in the Ballarat Courier about $33,000 for similar expenses on the Ballarat line. Sorry, I didn't read the article due to the paywall, and don't have a link to it, but if that is the case, the Ballarat line didn't do to bad I suppose.

Should we suppose that they paid most of the train crew costs as well ????

And another mishap nearby at Hopkin's Rd Rockbank.  This time involving a car, a garbage truck, and a Ballarat V/locity...

I meant to pen a bit of a puff piece about how good my recent V/Line trips have been this morning but work got in the way. Oh what a difference 24 hours can make.......

I had a pretty hectic schedule this week with dinner in Melbourne Wed night meaning that I needed to V/Lo it into town Wed evening and then back out this morning. 'er indoors' employer's insistence on running classes that finish at 6.30 means that I am back on the horse tonight after a leveller or 2 at The Railway Hotel in the afternoon sunshine.

As I have said before the new 16.49 Up ex Castlemaine looks a bit slow on the TT but experience has shown it can be anything up to 15 minutes early into Footscrazy depending on traffic and last night after a strange wait at Sunbury we roared all the way in at linespeed arriving around 12 mintures ahead of the TT at 18.10. Normally this is where I part company with the train but I was heading to the CBD so stayed on board. We lost a fair whack of time crawling to SC but still made it into P5 ahead of the timetable. Glad I don't have to do that every trip though.

The new day dawned and it was a Metro service from Norf Melbourne to Footscray and then the 09.13 Down Ex Footscray. This new service pretty much always runs to time and true to form had us alighting at CME just after 10.30

So it was after a couple of cold pints I dragged the suitcase over to P2 to await the 17.52 Up ex CME. I and 20 0r 30 others waited. And waited. And waited. The service crosses an Up train here and I could see that the road was set for an Up train but the PIDS board said that the V/Locity hadn't even left yet. Strange I thought but the PIDS isn't the most reliable piece of kit so I didn't think much of it. The scheduled time came and went but around 8 minutes later a headlight hoved into view around the corner and across the LX taking the diverge onto 2 road. The headlight looked a little odd but hey, here it was.

The train crawled along and as it got closer it became apparent that it was a diesel. Was it a late running Swan Hill service? No, it was an SSR light engine movement with a V/Line liveried P class up front towing a single PN loco. After that passed us by we returned to an all course Red before the Down departure signal was set for 1 Road. Yep, the next train through the bottle neck would not be ours.

Finally our "service" arrived 37 minutes late, still taking the slow road via 2 road despite no cross to make. No explanation was given by platform staff at CME with only 1 announcement the whole 40 minutes I was there which was at around 6.05 saying that the train was around 20 minutes late. We have made up 5 minutes if we are lucky as we plunge into Sunbury, not a great start to the Easter long weekend. Man I wish I had got the early train. Or a lift.......

A trespasser was seen walking down the middle of the track between Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat. Your train was held at Bendigo for 20 minutes before being allowed to depart but then had to travel at extreme caution all the way to Kangaroo Flat losing around another 10 minutes.

Its sometimes hard in these situations regarding trespassers and police to get accurate information as it can all change very quickly but once the train left Kangaroo Flat the train controller would have a reasonable idea of any further delays caused by altered crosses and so on and information should have filtered down to the station staff at Castlemaine. Hopefully they do better next time...

Generally speaking its easier for all concerned to arrive the train into its original designated platform than to get people to move.
  Carnot Minister for Railways

The Ballarat/Ararat Line has been an absolute mess today. So much for an 'upgrade'...
  RATLSNAKE Chief Train Controller

Channel 9 news just did a story bagging the age of the N-class locos and the carriages they pull....and yet there are equal Sprinters out of action, and even more VLos.....so yeah, good one to the young lady on her high horse that the N-class are well past their design lifetime.
Acting CEO made it known much of the outages are due to livestock incidents. Hmm, "news" indeed.

jakar
I don't disagree Jakar but I have on more than 1 occasion been subjected to a
P1 to P2 platform change at CME when a late running service meant an unscheduled cross

I would have thought that doing the opposite to the few pax waiting for this counter peak service and thus enabling some precious minutes to be made up wouldn't have been too hard

Anyhoo onwards and upwards.......

The key take-home is that the percentage of N locos and Sprinters out-of-action is much worse than the Vlo sets.

And yes, the blokes at the biowash have been rather busy.  Also worth noting that there were issues refilling sandboxes which sidelined a heap of trains recently...

To me the key point, apart from the wash (perhaps), is WHY?

I see V/line is terminating a couple of services short at Geelong tomorrow to facilitate the Captain's Choice 'royal train' SRHC charter to Warrnambool:

Due to the running of a special heritage service, the following trains will be replaced by coaches between Geelong and Waurn Ponds on Wednesday 7 April: 10.50am service from Southern Cross to Waurn Ponds. 12.18pm service from Waurn Ponds to Southern Cross.
V/Line Geelong Line Service Changes

This seems to go against the principle of heritage services not impacting revenue services, so is Captain's Choice paying for the replacement buses? Or has V/Line been directed to give regional tourism a boost during COVID?

Does anyone have a rough timetable for the trip tomorrow - I deduce from the service changes it will be through Geelong around Noon, but would be keen to sight the train at some stage as it goes through Colac.
