Seeing as everybody else is feeling foamy, Horsham to Hamilton would be nice, but really, we should be thinking bigger, I'm talking alternating services to both Mount Gambier (population 30,000) and Portland (population 11,000) onto Horsham via Ararat (connecting with Melbourne bound Vlocities in each direction of course).

2 services each-way to each of Portland and Mount Gambier, each day, with coaches filling the gaps (when a train is headed for Mt Gambier, it is met by a coach at Heywood for Portland, etc)

This would of course require rebuilding the Mount Gambier line (after 26 years, I doubt much of what is left would be salvageable) and a new junction at Heywood, facing the other way from the old one would be needed. Also, upgraded/rebuilt stations at Portland and Mount Gambier and a completely new one at Heywood would be needed (At least Hamilton and Dunkeld are still in good condition and could probably take a PTV train today) and wholesale line upgrades from Portland to Maroona, as last I heard, this whole line isn't in great condition (are grain trains still limited to 40km/h?).

And if you want to implement a decent timetable, with each train from the South West meeting a Melbourne bound train at Ararat, and each train from Horsham also meeting a Melbourne bound train at Ararat, the Ararat line will probably require a major upgrade with a crossing loop in there somewhere (Trawalla maybe).

All in all, probably a couple of billion dollars right there.

That got out of hand.

Of course in reality, I know none of this will happen.

What you could do is build the Port Fairy line from Warnambool back up and connect it to Portland and then just extend the Warnnambool Pax to Portland and Mt Gambier instead?  That would be much more smooth from a train operations perspective.

Same thing could be said about Daylesford, very premature to cut that service from Carlshrue off just as it started to be revived as a tourist destination.

Port Fairy real estate is astronomical - which is strange considering (like Daylesford) nobody wanted to live there in the eighties.

Fantasy but not completely silly.
The number of unprotected LX rules out Velocity - end of - yet N-class are doable.

5 cross loops between Horsham and Ararat (it is the main freight trunk after all). The Overlnd runs it in 1hr 18min.
4 cross loops between Maryborough and Mildura. 80kph freight, maybe 100kph pax.
0 cross loops between Maryborough and Ararat and 40kph.

But all is not lost. MBRP revision 2 is underway.
Upgrade track to Mildura, and fix the sidings ( useful for passing ?)
Cross loop and track upgrade for Maryborough/Ararat. 80kph? And Avoca could get their station opened.

The one advantage to the idea is better utilization of the rolling stock. Just using an N- set for a one way Maryborough/Mildura (6 hr) is a lot of sitting around idle.

There was discussion on this board a while back about the possibility of Portland/Dimboola day return connecting with Melbourne trains at Ararat - however you have more of a population being served with a Mildura/Dimboola day return (and Ararat/Maryborough).

A couple of comments regarding Port Fairy, well Billyboy you're obviously a property developer and I  wouldn't think you sell 2nd hand cars. Did someone take you to the bloody Port Fairy tip ?

Port Fairy was the go to place for most people from the Western District, I met plenty of kids from Melbourne also, Warrnambool then Portland for holidays, we as kids started going there from 1976 and the whole joint would be packed with people kids, surf boards, flippers goggles and snorkles.
The Gardens caravan park near the East beach had station wagons and Millard vans for as far as the eye could see.

Mid late 70's probably plenty of country people had started buying a holiday house there, mid 80's the big wallet brigade from Melbourne had started to pump the prices and by early 90's mostly bigger investors could afford to buy there.

About 2010 a fellow from Cavendish was going to buy an investment property there and turned out cheaper to buy one in Melbourne.

These days there's plenty of toff's and silver tails mainly out for 'Brunch' not the half a gallon of Melbourne Bitter 400gram T-Bone or a Chicken Parma the size of wheel cap type. The main street looks like a flash European sports car show these days not the Kingswood Wagon ! Which is probably why if you caught a bus there, not many people from Brighton, Toorak and the like catch busses let alone people who drive $100,000 sports cars.

As far as running a train there, not on your nelly, I'd spear a train off to a fair few other places before I would be lining up Port Fairy.

If the Warburton line had of managed to hang on into modern times, it's not hard to imagine a Sprinter sitting at the station. The Yarra Valley has a increasing commuter population and the speed restricted Warburton Highway must make travel pretty hard going.

Port Fairy was certainly bustling during the Christmas holidays, I don't recall going there during Easter but could only imagine it would have been rather busy.

During the winter time a lot of older folk seem to gravitate there, Nanna & Pa used to head down a bit, Nanna would snoop around , Pa fishing along the breakwater or near the light house. Other relatives from Melbourne often joined them, we often cruised down this time of year to see them as well, a low key place during winter.

The relatives from Melbourne were from Nth Balwyn, perhaps looking back, they were the silver tails and toff's, I was referring too Shocked might be this generation's great great grand kids that have taken over the Port....

Ok time to resume to  normal transmission...

I'm not too sure about Robinvale, but I do have relos in Manangatang, and I'm sure if there was still a daily train running from Manang' to Bendigo, they would use it*.

On a similar note: I have thought from time to time what a shame it is that the Wedderburn branch was dismantled all those years ago. I think a regular service between Wedderburn and Bendigo with intermediate stops at Inglewood, Bridgewater, Marong & Eaglehawk would make ideal work for a pair of Sprinters. While it is true, none of those are big towns in their own right (Inglewood is biggish depending on your measuring stick I suppose), I think together they would provide for enough passengers worthy of a useful service.

Still, you can't put the genie back in the bottle.



*No, I'm not suggesting they would use it every day, but when they need to get to the big smoke, I'm sure they would love to save on the drive to Swan Hill.

The idea of v/line services now to locations like daylesford is in my view becoming more and more relevant as people are leaving the cities and moving to coastal or regional locations.  I cannot really see this trend diminishing for a long while.

My understanding is that DSCR have been trying to get the money to re-open as far as Trentham but that there's some significant bridge-works requiring big money -

Someone with direct knowledge of the situation could probably enlighten us.

Mike we usually are.

They put a man on the moon 60 years ago but in Victoria we cannot run a project to shift a rail inwards or deliver a rail service back to Woodend for a booming region.  It has become laughable.
