I think he means to say that the local stoppers should run all day so that longer trips can run express all day.

Honestly they should just run Alamein trains into the city from first to last service. If they have the paths in peak, they have the paths outside of it too.
John.Z
An interesting fact with Alamein line services is that they actually have a higher frequency (every 15 minutes) when the shuttles operate between the peaks compared to during peak times when the trains run all the way to the city and the average frequency is closer to every 20 minutes.

If you can get a one-train ride to / from City, 5 minutes probably doesn't matter.  Add the two minute connection time at Camberwell, it's only a difference of 3 minutes, and that's assuming that you've just missed a train.

I'm not sure where you get that locals stop running for 2 hours.

Take Chatham, can't be more "local". Who cares where the train originated?
After 10am, Up and Down train EVERY 15 minutes until after 8pm. With a few exras in between. Certainly no gaps.

Well you can't get an express train from belgrave to the city between peaks. That's what I'm talking about, they stop running the local/express dual service.

Can't get one after 8 at night either, the last up express from Belgrave gets to Ringwood at 8:34 (formerly 8:36 in the old timetable) and every other one after that is all stations except East Richmond; up Lilydale expresses finish even earlier. Never mind having a total of 0 expresses on the weekend and public holidays. I'm sure this topic has a lot to do with the MATH stations. Thread derailment achieved, buses should be replacing trains between Caulfield and South Yarra in 3, 2, 1...! Laughing

Of course you can't. They would run head first into the down express.

The Lilydale share the south track in the afternoon are in the same boat. Some SAS starting at Ringwood instead of Blackburn
.
The Belgrave(starting 1:47pm) are express UP from Camberwell (or Box Hill after 3:17pm) , any quicker and they would be up the Lilydale/Alemaine/Ringwood tails.

There are 28 trains at Camberwell on the UP line between 12pm and 4pm. Just gotta wait your turn.

Yer but,,,  the penny dropped why 10 minute frequency on Weekend, but 15 minutes during Weekday off peak.
Answer, those expessses closing up the gap. No express = much higher frequency is possible.

Until such time (ie never) that 4th track to Box Hill is laid, this is the compromise.

In fact on weekdays when express trains don't operate, a 10-minute frequuency is also desirable.  The resources used on Camberwell - Ringwood shopper express services (if they still exist) can be redeployed in achieving so.
