Adani changes to narrow gauge

4600 class are apparently 'GT46CU-ACe Gen III (3)' hence the new look.
These are described as GT46CU-ACE Gen 3 locomotive, so is Gen 3 in this case the same as USA domestic locos Tier 3 standards?

EDIT; would these particular locos that are now imported into QLD meet present day USA domestic emission standards for new build locos to run in the USA?

The original GT46C ACe met USA Tier III standards.
The 710 engine can't meet Tier IV without exhaust aftertreatment.

One locomotive has been built with a 710 engine and aftertreatment, a rebuild by Norfolk Southern.
As far as I know it has not entered service.

Bowen Rail Company released some specifications today for the 4600s - 23.7m long & 138-tonnes.

My main focus is determining if the 710 engine in those Adani locos carries a plaque stating they could not be operated in the USA, which i understand is the case in some other locos imported into Australia from USA in recent years. Thus wondering if Adani or whatever it is now called, are importing the latest environmental friendly locos, or is Adani taking the lazy less environmental friendly option?

They would have, but would be rated for Tier 3 in US terms (Tier 4 is in effect so clearly cannot be taken back to the US and used). No real witch hunt really just the govt not imposing stricter emissions standards.

Considering what the US Tiers actually require and the end result (burning more fuel to burn off specified elements) the whole thing needs a thorough going over...

The model number is interesting.
This is an Australian model number, possibly to link this locomotive to the very successful GT42ACU -ACe.

This locomotive appears to be a USA built model GT46AC, fitted with an Australian style cab and Australian design bogies.

t can be seen that the arrangement of the hood doors and air intakes matches that of the standard US export unit, and is nothing like that of the GT42CU ACe or GT46C ACe built in Australia.

Gen III might just mean that it has later equipment than the GWB class which were model GT46C ACe.
It is possible that these units have separate inverters per axle, although this option was not that popular on the USA market.

These Bowen Rail locomotives seem to be lower in height than the standard GT46AC and also longer.
The GT46AC is already longer than 22 metres, the standard length over couplers in Australia.
The extra length can be seen in the section of hood behind the dynamic brakes.

I expect that One Rail may purchase some of these.

It appears that they have successfully built a lot of GT46ACs.
The problem might have been with using the Australian design with which they were not familiar.
These new locomotives have no relationship with the Australian GT46C-ACe except for using the same basic engine and generator and other major components.  They have, however, been adapted to use bogies of Australian design.

I can't claim to have seen the engine plates, but the locomotive normally carries a plate indicating non compliance with US emissions requirements. These should be fitted to the Bowen Rail locomotives.

Because the USA emissions requirements only apply to domestic USA locomotives, no export locomotives have been offered meeting USA Tier 4 emissions requirements. So Bowen Rail did not have the option of buying a 1067mm gauge locomotive meeting USA Tier 4 requirements.

Seems they're having trouble getting enough crew...They've advertised again on Seek nationwide for what is, I believe, the third time for Driver's to be residentially-based up there.Rolling Eyes

Perhaps if they'd consider a 2/2 FIFO or DIDO roster they'd get more applicants...There's plenty of blokes I work with that live in Qld & NSW that have got the shytes with WesTyrannical Australia and their border bollocks who might consider coming home. Wink

Part of Adani's agreement with the Queensland government was to use locally sourced staff, so I don't think FIFO is on the cards for traincrew. I'm aware of some traincrew working in Bowen for Pacific National who have DIDOed to and from Townsville and Mackay (both cities are 200km from Bowen).

Bowen has a population of 10,400 and is part of the Whitsundays Regional Council, which has a population of 36,000 - so it's not really the back'o Bourke kind of place usually needing FIFO. I'd suggest Bowen Rail needs to offer more dollars than it currently is to coax qualified crews from other operators.

Adani is mining coal for its own power stations in India. When they stop burning coal, Adani will stop mining coal.
