New Acland Mine closes

  Sulla1 Chief Commissioner

New Hope Group's New Acland mine near Oakey closes tomorrow, with the miner unable to obtain State Government approvals for its long awaited Stage Three extension. The mine closes with the loss of 280 jobs, but will continue pursuing approvals for its expansion.

Since opening in 2002 it has been the largest traffic source for QR's West Moreton system, loading up to 11 trains per day with 5.2-million tonnes of thermal coal per annum - representing more than 50% of daily traffic on the Toowoomba Range.

The closure has also impacted Aurizon's coal operations in Southern Queensland, wiith the Fisherman Island Coal Division crew depot also expected to close, leaving its Willowburn (Toowoomba) depot to crew the remaining services to the Cameby Downs mine.
