Derailment at Bethungra Spiral

  Carnot Minister for Railways

Reports coming in of MB9 in the dirt at Bethungra Spiral. At the top of the loop apparently. Down line not blocked.

Going to be a big cleanup with containers and wagons piled up. Locos still upright, crew ok in reports.

Northbound traffic is using the down line as reported.

I had a look at those rails mid last year and noted that the inside rail was well worn from wheel flanges but it must have still been within spec to have not been replaced. There was also a grease pot just before the road crossing at that location.

I am wondering if it was still the same rail will eventually find out if/when a report comes out.

Looks like one 5 pack wagon derailed and took out the following one and the rear of the train eventually ran into it with momentum.

I heard yesterday a rock had rolled down the embankment colliding with the rail and a wagon, any substance?

The train vibrations could have dislodged a Boulder or larger rock which may have rolled down and hit a wagon on the way through.

Most of the comments i saw suggested, which is more likely, that the rock was relocated by the wagons getting upset, which they clearly have to a significant degree.
