There is no doubt there would be more rail traffic if it were all still Broad Gauge. The lack of direct link to Geelong & Melbourne via Ballarat will keep hindering the SG until something is done about it.

This is perhaps the biggest "I told you so", in all of history. What happens when you doubt and ridicule my opinion on such important matters.

I think a good test is to ask if any traffic coming off the Mildura line on SG is going anywhere else but Melbourne or Geelong?

A small fraction of the grainys on the line have been going to Portland. That's it.

The project would've been a success had it been completed in it's entirety.

Absolutely Correct! Right idea, wrong practice!
Just like electric/hydrogen vehicles are the future,
so is SG rail in Regional Victoria, if rail is to survive there!

When we were in drought in NSW some traffic was going to Bomaderry. That wouldn't have been possible if it was still BG.

The failure isn't because it is now SG instead of BG but because victrack or whomever is in charge screwed up the conversion process so badly that it would seem to have been better if nothing was done at all. Even the ARTC would have done a better job.

All these posts don't disguise the fact the Mildura line is buggered because it is sg.

How much traffic went to Bomaderry?
How much traffic to Melb/Geelong now goes by road because the line is sg (via Ararat)?

All the traffic going by road instead of rail is a direct consequence of the Andrews Labor Government failing to deliver the project in full.  Andrews Labor can find a few extra billion to finish a freeway tunnel but can't find any extra to fix up a mess of their own creation.

How much are they spending to bail out Transurban's Great Big Trucking Funnel? You know, the one that was going to cost the Victorian Taxpayer $1.5bn or thereabouts? Some estimates now have the total project cost close to $12bn but most seem to think $10bn is more like it. Anyone know what the split is now between the parties?

Don't forget it was Andrews Labor that changed the environmental regulations to allow the toxic soil from that tunnel to be dumped 200m from houses and schools and the destruction of paperwork after 2 years.

As opposed to the rail used in the Maryborough > Ararat rebuild which was Sims Metal ready.......

The re railing is really not going to help the situation, 53 kg rail and extra ballast to allow for 65 kph with heavier engines.

Curves will need restrictive speeds applied, and in order to take advantage of the higher speed additional motive power will need to be added.

The current 40 kph can be maintained with 2 locos what needed to expedite the trains and paths available is the Elmhurst Crossing facility.

this allows more paths each way, in both directions unlike current 2 hrs 40 approx between Art and Mbgh either way.

The problem then moves to Maryborough and beyond with short loops to Yelta and no sidings if thing go wrong.

This massive screw-up is too big to be a mistake, it was a deliberate act by the government to ensure the Transurban project for trucks to the Port of Melbourne was protected.

R766,
Why do they need a crossing loop at Elmhurst?

Often, we don't even get one train a day, either direction on the line!

Another crossing loop isn't going to gain 3 trains each direction every day.

Currently the bottle neck is Tatyoon to Ararat, Trains have to be held at Emu, Maryborough, Maroona or Tatyoon if there is the opposing move in transit.

Knowing the limitations operators do not currently program grain trains on Yelta or S Lake / Mtang due to operational limitations that exist.

A BG train from Glng to Mbgh cannot leave Creswick if a SG movement is occurring at Mbgh to or from Art.

Turello reinstatement will help a little bit.

SG trains are often held at Mbgh in the short 2 road as there are train at Ararat or coming from Dim or Glg to Mbgh and this blocks the ARTC loops needed for other purposes not sidings.

Don't know the exact number but would have been frequent because it was the only source of grain available to make all our cereals. It was talked about on Railpage somewhere I am sure.
