Aurizon has begun marketing its Mt Isa Line Integrated (MILI) Freighter between Townsville and Mt Isa.

The service runs twice per week in each direction offering door to door and terminal to terminal pickup and delivery for any and all customers with a single or mutliple containers to move. The shipments can be regular or one-off.

The integrated service for customers harks back to the days of QR's QLink services from the 1990s, so it looks like everything old is new again as Aurizon returns to traditional "railwaying" to grow its customer base.

The link is really interesting, Sulla do you recall if Aurizon has used the 'safe and green' factor before in their advertising?

Also no lock in contracts and you can ship just 1 or a heap of containers with empties returned to origin FOC

Very interesting, especially the price - we have occasionally receive whole containers at work although we usually deal in LCL loads, I wouldn't be moving to Mt Isa in a hurry with those rates!!!

No, it doesn't appear to be LCL. The service Aurizon is offering is to a pick-up, transport and deliver 20ft or 40ft containers using side-lifting truck trailers. It will be up to the individual customer to fill or empty the containers as they see fit.

I guess, if it was one 20ft container, it's a HCL service (Half Car Load).

Doing the sort of things that rail used to do between the old era of just linehaul, coordinated services (as now proposed), and just linehaul as most do nowadays.

I don't think it's the first time Aurizon has pitched its green credentials, but the "safe and green" pitch is certainly getting pushed hard with the marketing for this service. Road safety, heavy vehicle market share and road fleets converting to hydrogen fuel cells are all high profile issues among the travelling public and the transport industry in North Queensland. I guess Aurizon wants to get noticed.

The containers coming from Brisbane are travelling on Linfox or PN (mostly Toll loading) trains. I don't think there'd be anything stopping Linfox or Toll forwarding their containers on Aurizon's service. Having said that, apart from supermarket consumables and some industrial products and chemicals from Gladstone, the great majority of freight moving to or from Mt Isa originates in or is destined for Townsville.

Something needs to be done to get the fuel trucks off the Flinders Highway too.  Last week I travelled between Charters Towers and Townsville and the amount of three and four trailer road trains carrying fuel was ridiculous.  Added to these trucks were a myriad of other road trains, as well as quite a few camper vans and caravans.  What could possibly go wrong?

Freightgate, Sulla1 will be best able to accurately answer your question.  Fuel was previously carried by Aurizon on the Mt. Isa line and true to form they chose to offload it to road.

Yes, there have been several rail served terminals at the Townsville Port, the Shell and BP terminals were the last rail served terminals, with BP going to road in 2016 and Shell going to road in 2017 (when Aurizon stopped running the freight service that moved the fuel tankers after PN took over Glencore freight contract). Shell and BP both have 10-year contracts with road hauling contractors. A new Puma terminal built at the Townsville Port in 2015 was the first terminal built without rail access.

In the 1990s QR was running 50-wagon bulk fuel sets twice weekly between Townsville and Mt Isa, by the 2000s these sets were broken up into rakes attached to the 6M54 freights with fuel to Cloncurry and Mt Isa.

In 2015 Aurizon was still moving about 250,000-tonnes of fuel (mostly diesel) per annum on the Mt Isa Line. As of today there's around 500,000-tonnes of fuel being road-hauled to Cloncurry and Mt Isa per annum.

The Mt Isa freight corridor has been a state of flux since Glencore forced its entire take or pay freight contract onto an unprepared PN in late 2016. By unfortunate coincidence (or not) this was within months of triple trailer road train access beginning to the Townsville Port, which permitted the mass modal shift to road when PN didn't have the capacity to move Glencore's freight.

A similar situation has arisen this year with Glencore replacing PN with its own rollingstock and Qube taking on crewing and logistics. The new operation is somewhat short of operating capacity, which has once again shifted a lot of Glencore freight back to road. It turns out six aging secondhand 2250hp locos and one 2000hp loco can't do the work of the eight 3000hp AC traction locos PN had assigned to the Mt Isa Line - and I find it strange that the decision makers thought they would.

For those wondering why Aurizon has rediscovered the railway religion - the accountants have been pretty busy at its Bulk Division the last few years...

2016/2017 results for Bulk Division were revenues of $645.2-millon, an EBIT of just $14.4-million and tonnes hauled 58.3-million.

2021/2021 results for Bulk Division were revenues of $612.2-million, a much healthier EBIT of $112-million and tonnes hauled 51.1-million.

2017 was Andrew Harding's first year as CEO and the year was pretty much rock bottom for the Bulk and Intermodal Divsions, with both divisions under review for an Aurizon business exit.

In 2020/2021 Aurizon is now making more profit from doing less work - which I guess is giving it the wiggle room to refill its previous operating capacity.
