Have booked a service in Queensland end of this year being a rail bed service between Far North Queensland and Brisbane.

My question is has anyone on RP used this service and what did they think?

Sadly, because it is what it is, there are no actual sleeping cars on the train, therefore a RailBed is the best accommodation on the Cairns Tilt train that's available.

The Cairns Tilt train is EXCEPTIONALLY quiet to travel in. It's so quiet that you will be able to hear people whispering several seat rows away.

I've read reports in Tripadvisor from disappointed travellers about the noise levels from conductors walking through the cars with jangling keys to other pax snoring, talking on phones and to each other and others with other bodily noises Shocked etc.

Therefore, if QR don't provide EAR PLUGS in the complimentary toiletries kit make sure you buy some in advance. This will ensure a reasonably quiet journey and a perception that you will be travelling in your own private space.

As you have already booked, it's too late to avoid the overnight sector which is what I do these days by flying direct to Proserpine, staying over for a night, thence walking to Proserpine station for an early (6:30) start and a day time journey to Townsville or Cairns and this is what I do every time I travel to/from North Qld by train.

Thanks for the feedback Mike.  I have read the reviews on tripadvisor (I am also a contributor) and well ho hum let's wait and see.  Four of us are taking the trip between Proserpine and Brisbane.

The timetable interestingly did not provide for a day train and the train we have booked will depart PROSERPINE circa 18:00

The QR website talks of an Airlie Beach railway station but I cannot find it.

I did it a while okay. It was okay. I found the most noise at night came from staff coming through with their keys and the automatic doors opening and closing. Next time I would take earplugs.

Bathrooms were good, large and still clean a few hours out from Brisbane. Showers fine.

The bed was fine. Bit like the old Emirates business class circa 5 years ago

Bevans...there is no Airlie Beach station, however QR has a guaranteed connection from there to Proserpine.
It's about 18 kilometres from the beach to Proserpine and I always stay there in preference to staying at the beach....just my preference of a town compared to a resort.

There is a town bus service between Proserpine and Airlie Beach.

If you are staying a few days it's well worth taking the ferry to South Molle island and the 3 km walking track to the lookout which has splendid views over the Reef.

I'll be doing this again next July.

I travelled in a Railbed from Bundaberg to Townsville, last year.

The bed itself was comfortable, but I found the pod a little narrow across the shoulders. Privacy was a real issue, with no curtains, and your bed is open to the aisle. Railbed as a seat in its day sitter configuration is just OK, doesn’t line up with windows properly, and I think First Class seats in other QR trains are better. Shower in the carriage didn’t work very well, was cramped, no screen, and nowhere to put dry clothes. By comparison, the shower I used on the Inlander to Mt Isa was roomy and nicely appointed.

I enjoyed the trip, the crew were friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent.

I will likely use a Railbed again, but in my opinion sleeping pods on trains are a joke: a big step down from compartment Sleeping Cars, and an inappropriate use of airline style bedding on a train. I can only guess that they were cheap to design and build.

BTW, after my trip, I was extensively surveyed by QR, online, about my Railbed experience. They asked lots of questions specifically about privacy and security. They asked for ratings on proposed privacy enhancements such as fitting curtains, and even converting the cars to full compartments!

QR's carriage cross sectional profile is I feel too tight to do sleepers properly from my previous experience on QR landers compared to the XPT sleeper and sleepers in India.

People pay $5000+ to travel return BC on a decent airline on a 24h flight to London, so to get a similar level of comfort on QR Brisbane to Cairns for a fraction of the price is good value. By the sounds of it QR does have some room to improve, but the pure sleepers are not coming back.

I really appreciate the feedback guys, much appreciated.

We will give the rail beds a go but would have preferred sleeping compartments.  We are planning an Amtrak trip in the USA early next year and plan in that trip to use compartment sleepers between Chicago and San Francisco.

Unsure of the gauge in India, but I'm guessing it's SG. In Qld it's NG, so obviously the cars are narrower.

However the old Lander cars had plenty of corridor and cabin room in the twinettes to give a good length to the bunks. and in Economy on the CTT there is plenty of room for 2+2 seating with a reasonable aisle space.

The problem with the Rail beds is the pod set up which makes them far wider than Economy. It might have been better to set the cars out as 2 pods on one side of the car and one pod on the other.

That's what the Railbeds already are - 2 + 1 pods. I can't see any space advantage over compartment cars.

The diesel tilt train carriages are wider than other QR rollingstock, and wider than the XPT carriages.

Depends if the line North of Townsville is closed. A few services this week terminated at Townsville with flooding preventing access to Cairns.

Rory does a comprehensive revue and always objective in regard to the service used I reckon.
Last week I watched his revue of the Inlander train, Townsville to Mt Isa and at the end of the video he says the Gov't was looking at replacing the old trains, some money had been gained and as usual a business case to be developed.
Has this gone any further as it's nearly 12 months since this announcement ?

Big Shunter.

if you scroll though Rory's video he revues quite a number of the QLD train journeys.

The Spirit of Quensland carriages are the widest ones in Australiaat 3.05m wide.
This width was adopted to allow for sleeping compartments with wheelchair access.
I have forgotten the reasonsnow, after al this time, the sleeper cars were not built.

Walkers had a mock up for a sleeper in the bowen st works.  I was in the compartment during open day years a go,no idea why they were never built.
