What do we understand these to be?

Victoria’s Department of Transport (DoT) exercised an option in September 2020 for a further 18 three-car VLocity DMUs from Bombardier Transportation, which has since been acquired by Alstom. The order was part of a 2018 framework agreement for the supply of rolling stock for use by the state’s V/Line operator.
Somebody

Are they to be longer distance services such has those required for  Bairnsdale and note the new stabling in Bairnsdale Yard to be completed.  Where do N sets park now not at Bairnsdale?

Methinks I already said this.

The 12 VLo mentioed in the budget is payment upon delivery of the 2020 order. Nothing new to see here.

It was a "forward estimate" which is now a current item. That's budgeting 101.

Keen to understand what happens at Bairnsdale now in terms of the Nsets?

They stable in the platform with the loco still attached but pulled off the down end. This gives the required access to both sides of the loco for its prep in the morning. Only need to be able to access one side of a carriage set for a partial (PTX) brake examination so its ok to remain in the platform. A V/Locity requires access to both sides for a prep which is why they can't stable in the platform as well. The yard is not compliant to current standards for stabling which is what they're going to change.

Luckily there is little vandalism in such a remote area.

That is a lot of money for servicing a train and especially a train not fit for that distance and with less comfort.

Traralgon will see a 40 min off peak frequency after the Gippy line upgrade is completed.

Budget papers reveal funding to deliver existing outstanding 2 sg sets, plus 8 bg commuter sets bringing it up to 100 Commuer sets and 6 sg sets PLUS  12 x 3 car  bg for Warrnambool & Shepparton to replace loco hauled bringing total to 118 sets of which 6 are sg .

You can look it up, but essentially it involves
- Duplication with new platforms Bunyip-Longwarry
- Extension of Morwell crossing loop and new platform
- New platform at Traralgon
- Signalling upgrades at Traralgon
- New Avon River bridge (already completed)

Not quite, unbelievably after all these years said to still only be PARTIAL duplication of Bunyip - Longwarry !!!! Note the misleading  spin doctors wording  "duplication at Bunyip & Longwarry  NOT duplication between Bunyip and Longwarry !!!! Second platform and extended loop at Morwell,  re-commissioning of the original platform at Traralgon so trains can cross at Traralgon.

So didn't Swine Hill qualify for a set of these longer distance hot rods.
Thought that would be a part of the long haul services or will I be pushing up daisy's before that happens ?

Going over took the short cut from the coast road across to Heywood and the Mount. Coming back had to go into Portland .  The highway between Heywood and the Mount is not too bad, currently.  Most of the trucks with chips and logs to Portland go via another shorter route South of the Princes Highway, which is the subject of current repairs.

As important as it is to me, it's unlikely Swan Hill will be getting V'Locity's until all the unprotected level crossings are made protected...that's quite a few. I imagine there will also be a track upgrade before then as well in a similar vein to Warrnambool, Gippsland and Shepparton.

Buying more diesel vlocity units is mind numbingly stupid. A waste of money. Diesel will be $3 a litre soon. Examining the cost of electrification to Geelong with the cost of diesel and the large fuel bill V/Line has I suspectnpay ack to be in less than 5 years for the entire project.

As Mike points out the Swan Hill line needs a bit of work before Vlo's can operate up there. The Swan Hills will soon be the last loco hauled services in Vic, with very strong talk that they'll only be shuttles between Bendigo and Swan Hill as well. Allegedly servicing of the loco's and car sets to be carried out in Bendigo, freeing up valuable siding + workshop space around SCS and allowing Victrack/V/Line to rejig Dynon and the Bank sidings etc to better suit Vlocity operations.

I suspect you might want to do some actual research before making such comments. V/Lines fuel cost is listed in their annual report, have a look and get back to us with your revised time frame.

That would be an Interesting development, the loco hauled trains perform like a slug on the Bendigo line (though their Velocity replacements would likely serve every VLine station stop on the line)

Would the Bendigo bound Velocity (forming the journey to Swan Hill) be destoned for Epsom or Huntly with Swan Hill line passengers asked to alight at Bendigo Railway Station, where a locomotive hauled train would arrive In the same platform (after the Velocity has departed) and much the same on the return journey.
Or would a cross platform change be done.

I think this might be an interesting thought.  Moving servicing of locos to Bendigo sounds to be like they want to wipe out the servicing at Dynon for developers.  The PTV and V/Line do very little in decision making that is accretive to passengers the corporation.  They usually have their genesis in political moves that do not benefit rail.

Interesting comment again from FG ablve about more DMu's when really this is not going to go well for cost and also reductions on transport emissions in Victoria which in V/Line are substantial.  An N class loco uses approximately 3 litres of diesel per kilometre.  Does anyone know what a 3 car vlocity would use?

Thanks Mike & Jakar, yes well aware the Vlo's need the track, level crossings and probably signaling to be given a major refurbishment but I thought for some reason this line was part of the program with W'bool and Shep, don't know how I came to that conclusion.

So there's no similar program to up-grade this line in the short term. You would have to think it would be, but perhaps it's out of sight, out of mind like the line to Echuca.
The best case scenario will be if the track could be kept in good nick for 115kph loco hauled if this possible, which may not be such a bad situation if people are transferring to Velocity at Bendigo as Jakar has hinted.

bevans
Not sure how you came to that conclusion bevans as I certainly didn't imply anything of the sort. Sth Dynon is used for a lot more than just V/Line loco's, plus they've just poured big $$$ into reactivating more of the maintenance shed for servicing of the Vlocity fleet. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
