Maitland Steamfest Debacle

  FMAChet Station Master

To anyone who's paid for the now cancelled Steamfest, what a surprise, has anyone heard back from the organizers regarding tickets for next year?

Just that I paid for the Great Train race event which I was supposed to be on the train behind R766, and from what I've been told, both R766 and 5917 are not taking part of next year's Steamfest. Is that true?

I've just received word that because the Picnic Train are having problems with their current base and are they've moving down south for a time, R766 and 5917 might not attend next year's Steamfest. I spoken with them myself.

As I am heartbroken by the news, the Steamfest had advertised for four trains for the Great Train Race, and probably are since they are offering to transfer to next year's Steamfest. They only got two loco's, 3801 and 6029, only 3526 is available.

How will they rectify the matter?

Dane, I think it’s called an extreme weather event rather than a debacle. While these cancellations are disappointing, they are nobody’s fault, and I’m sure after the many hours of organisation and dollars spent, they too are perhaps quite heartbroken. Not to mention people whose lives have been turned upside down by the recent extreme weather.

As already suggested, contact the event organisers.

I was talking about the situation regarding next year's event, not this year's cancellations. Believe me, my heart goes out to those who's lives that have been turned upside down by the floodings, second time this year. I wasn't implying any blame to anyone, unless Mother Nature is accountable for the floodings.

The Picnic Train had explained it to me that because of them moving base down south, R766 and 5917 may not take part of this year's Steamfest, which leaves them needing two more to replace them. 3526 is the only steam locomotive available, but there is no other loco motive to make it four.

And I've already tried contacting the organizers, they haven't replied to me since last Tuesday.

They probably don't understand what an important person you are.

...

Can we please treat each other in a fair manner?

Other than 3801, 6029 and 3526, what other locomotive can they find for next year's Steamfest?

What about a different historical loco that may be looking at retirement soon. Say an NR?

Where down south are they moving?  Surely not so far south that they cant come back for 2023?  I mean if a Victorian/SA operator with a SG loco could get the accreditation in place, they could conceivably make it happen...

They never said where exactly they are moving, but all I know is that that they are moving base down South for a time, and it is unlikely at this stage that both R766 and 5917 will be a part of the Steamfest next year.

Believe me, I want R766 and 5917 to join 3801 and 6029 next year at the Steamfest, as I paid to be on the train behind R766 at the Great Train Race.

On a different note, does anyone have any idea of when R766 will be running in Sydney? As opposed to around the Hunter Region.

It's a little difficult to take you too seriously when you complain about having no reply just six days after your enquiry (two of those days being the weekend.)

Do you seriously believe that you are a really important priority? When I was the secretary of a preservation group many years ago, I'm afraid that if you had made a complaint like that to me, you would have been firmly told where to go and what to do when you got there. (The actual wording is "Do you like sex and travel?")
Preservation groups are (a) not bursting with people and (b) subject to a lot of correspondence, much of which begins with "Why don't you" or "Why haven't you" or "When will you". Many of us grew to dislike whingers.

Loving the response. Always thought that “go and self fornicate” was appropriate.

Fair post valvegear.

What has to or needs to be considered in all of this for next year is the position that those who own the locomotives in question, also lets not forget the issues that are taking place at the Branxtion location with all the rolling stock along with the two steamers and other diesels they own, and is under threat with the amount of time they have to get these items out of Branxton and to a new location.

I don't know where they will be able to locate all of that stuff but perhaps Orange East Fork may come into the equation at least for temporary benefits, or perhaps even Thrilmere until their permanent new location is completed.

The later aspects will be a big cost to the group/owners of the items to accommodate them in temporary or permanent locations and that will take time.

As for loco's for a steamfest, certainly the nanny would be available, but what of 6029, could some intermittent work be carried out on 3642 that is enough to get steamfest operating, albeit on shortened workload and what of 3801?  Its still early days and no doubt those able to lend a hand and what of 3001t it should be in steam by then.

Steamfest, the organisation, is no doubt also getting lobbed with these enquiries when they don't know what'll happen in 9 months any more than OP or I do.

It makes it very hard to answer questions of OPs' nature with any degree of accuracy.

Note for FMAChet; I received your PM 3 days ago, and did you the courtesy of a reply. The note on the PM says that you have not read it yet. I thought I should let you know.
