Where is it? (Victoria)

Pic was taken in May 2008, not long after the new curves were laid from north to west.

I thought it was that, but when I went for a look on Google street view it didn't look the same... is the photo recent?

Have to just guess next time!

Victoria now has:
Where am I (country, not cryptic)
Where am I (suburban, not cryptic)
Where am I (country, cryptic)
Where am I (suburban, cryptic)
Where am I (country, photo)
Where am I (suburban, photo)
Where am I (suburban or country, from a track plan)
Where am I (tram)

AFAIK the opening photo of this new quiz was never identified.  The quiz jumped straight into a second opening photo.
There appears to be a curve to the viewer's left behind the tram, and a curve in antique paving to the viewer's right.
I can't align that with anything.
My first reaction was for former Hawthorn Depot, but there is only one track in the street in which the tram is posing.
That narrowed me fast to agree with Preston Workshops, but I can't find anything there to align.  The trees match, but not the housing backdrop.
I would have gone for St Georges Rd at Miller St, but the photo predates the relocation of tracks (perhaps not?), and there was a petrol station on the south-west corner of Miller St.
Although this is no longer an identification which will lead to glory and being the new quizmaster, it is still worth coming up with an answer.  It just has to be in Melbourne, and not in Stockholm during a visit to the ASEA factory.

Yeah, sorry to everyone about the unidentified one - I never logged in until just now (in actual fact, I haven't been on the net at all since that post, hence the week or so missed).

Apparently, Z3.223 in my old photo was in fact outside the Preston Workshops according to YarraTramDriver (a very big thanks for clearing that 20 year old mystery up!). Looks like Polar Tiger was right all along! Embarassed

I am not sure you are right Polar Tiger because if that was the Southbank Blv intersection there would be points for the tracks continuing south.

I'm guessing the end of Clarendon St South Melbourne/Middle Park where the tracks turn west to run down the side of Albert Park where the soccer stadium is.  If you look carefully at the blue lights just over the top of the tram, they look very much like the lights at the top of the Rialto in Collins st - the tram line is clearly on the other side of this.

Thanks to the kind suggestions of RoderickSmith, the following rule changes will be in place.

3 days is about the right amount of patience for either a yes/no response, a clue or a new photo to be mounted by a winner, with an apology or offer of open floor only for going beyond 3 days.

There is little point formalising the number of clues, or the frequency with which they must be offered. If people are becoming impatient, sending a PM is better than sending an on-list reminder.

Again thanks,

My first reaction was Dandenong Rd, Caulfield, probably near the siding.
I would have been happier without the 'Caulf...' at right of frame.

You got it.  I was careful to blank out the route number and destination on the tram - I didn't think about shop fronts.

My mistake.

I was a bit worried when this quiz started (and commented): Victoria has far more quizzes than any other state gets.
My next worry: it will be hard to get the right pitch, either too easy or impossible.
So far the range of photos has shown that it is possible to get a right pitch, but perhaps a lot of Paintshop work will be needed first.  Unlike trains, trams sit firmly in a context.

The founder took onboard my suggestion not to be too hasty.

I have another idea to float: Once it is a tram network quiz, why not include Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo (in SEC years), and Haddon, Ballarat, Bendigo and Bylands (in preservation years)?

I had to search hard for a photo which I thought took the middle ground (not too easy, not too hard).  Many of mine have appeared in other locations at other times; all I can hope is that someone who has seen one of mine before holds back.  I can see that many of my potential ones  would require extensive cropping or painting out (which is time consuming).  This one was easy to prepare: resize with no cropping.

Where is it?

I'm not sure if it is Whiteman St or Normanby Rd at that spot, but yes: the boarding point for CTR trips in the current era, at the corner of Clarendon St, and opposite Jeff's Shed (where patrons can park their cars).  442 didn't have much more time left in service; I had booked with a friend to make sure that we had a final run it it before withdrawal (I had had a trip about 15 years earlier).

Offlist, I was able to add to the earlier responses regarding the avatar photo, and confirm the precise spot at Preston Workshops where it was taken.  'Outside Preston Workshops' was a trifle misleading, as it was inside the workshops fence.

Control handle to 'Westernport'.

What a classic image of plush P&MTT middle-class Melbourne.  A good choice for the quiz: not impossible, but not giveaway either.

I'll enter Burke Rd between Mont Albert Rd and Cotham/Whitehorse Rd.
