My initial idea of having monthly threads for V/Line incidents and disruptions was that it would reduce the amount of new topics on each seperate incident (breakdown here, fatality there etc.); and have one central place where all incidents/disruptions affecting V/Line services could be reported / viewed / found (if looking back in time).
The first months thread (January) ended up being 10 pages; however, since then, reporting and the amount of discussion posts has fallen; so yes, perhaps it is time for a stickied one thread only for V/Line incidents/disruptions to be put into place. However, if this was to be done, I'd reccomend segregating it into years for easier future reference (i.e. with the CityRail incidents/disruptions thread, it covers three seperate years of postings - tricky to narrow down to specific months/days)
Sure, a yearly thread may not be the easiest to sort through either; but it would be better in my opinion than combining years; and one could provide an index to months in the first posting.

N455 derailed this afternoon at Seymour after running the 1213 down service; was rerailed by 1550. Derailment cause is beieved to be due to the track splitting in the road N455 was running around its carset in, down at the loco depot area.

Anyone know what is going on today?
I've received SMS and email alerts since this morning first saying there were delays on the Geelong line before 0730. Followed by a cancellation of the 1640 flagship (converted to road coach) and now a general alert about an incident (can't be good news) at Newport which of course stops the Geelong line.
Sounds like a bad day overall for the Geelong line.

Where is the risk management ? The network needs to be much more robust, with alternative pathways where practicable. If the Sunshine-Newport freight line were immediately available for passenger running in peak direction the case of incidents, it would allow some service to Geelong to proceed, even if there are delays.
Some of the trains disrupted have 7 cars, and would hold nearly 600 passengers. That's up to 12 buses for one train, then up to another 12 buses for the next train a few minutes later. Connex would also be snapping up buses to replace their services.
Other alternative routes that should be passenger-service ready include Ballarat to North Shore, and Broadmeadows to Sunshine via the Albion line.
Bustitution is feasible for many off-peak services, but as rail travel becomes more popular the logisitics of providing buses at short notice during peak periods becomes progressively difficult.

No idea, but with the reported 20-30lt spilled, I doubt it had fallen off. Punctured possibly, but with a tiny spill like that (considering how many thousand litres an N can hold...) the tank falling off would be unlikely.

V/Line in the past has used the Brooklyn freight lines when the Footscray-Newport section is unavailable, it seems strange they ran for the buses, especially given the volume of pax to be moved.

Yeah I saw the 9 news report too. Ironic isn't it? The loco in question is on the Geelong line, and is the "City of Geelong " loco...media must have loved the "perfect shot" opportunity.

Well the tank did fall off and was seen sitting squarely between the bogies sitting flat on the two running rails .
The fuel tank is obviously suspended on cushioned brackets suspended between the bogies of the loco . Perhaps lucky the tank decided to descend to the rails at that point where the train was doing max 65 kmh at Spotswood. Might have been a very different outcome if that had happened at 115 kmh .
