    So...who's jurisdiction is this constant power & signal failure at Newport? Metro? V/Line? VicTrack? "The ghost of the Victorian Railways"?


    Or Westinghouse, the installers of the brand new system there?

    If it can't be pinned down, let point the finger at the DOT.  They let out the contracts.

    Great start to 2011. Epic fail at Newport, reportedly massive power failure. Geelong line shutdown. Assuming all other South-west Metro lines also shutdown.

    So...who's jurisdiction is this constant power & signal failure at Newport? Metro? V/Line? VicTrack? "The ghost of the Victorian Railways"?

    Guess I'm one of the lucky ones this morning then. I came through on the 6.06 up Werribee. Must have just missed the disruption.

    Metro spokeswoman Geraldine Mitchell said trains were suspended after "an external power supply fault" caused the signals and points systems to fail at Newport station at 6.40am.


    So, no back up power for the points and signals?

    Otherwise, V/Line could have kept running with a clear run without sparks.

    Third world infrastructure, sometimes.

    Indeed.  Pathetic that this incident causes so much havoc, because there is no redundancy.

    Current Scenario:

    Power goes out Newport - Metro & Vline borked

    RRL Scenario:

    Power goes out Newport - ONLY Metro borked
    Power goes out Tarneit - ONLY RRL borked

    To me, the RRL Scenario would be better than the former.

    Also to note, the article said that the possum got zapped at 3.58am yet my 6.06 up spark ex Werribee made it through no problems at all that would seem to suggest that there are backup power supply systems in place, if the power had been out since 5am as reported by The Age.

    You have an alternative path through Werribee/Newport.

    it's like a car with a dodgy alternator: you could go out and buy another car "just in case" it breaks down when you want to head to work, or you get the mechanic to fix it.

    Of course in this analogy, the second car means your other half can drive down the shops when you are at work, with RRL you have more tracks to put trains onto.

    Couldn't see the rail line form Morwell Macca's, was a wall of white. I have a Video of my 2km trip home somewhere.

    Couple of traffic lights were out, as was the power at the Pub. Maccas was on the verge of going.

    There was loud thunder from 7:00pm-9:00pm, flashes of lightening, followed by more rain

    The evening Bairnsdale replacement 'bus as far as I am aware was cancelled account of road flooding.  I believe that there is an occupation this weekend; any access east on the replacement coaches will be dependent on the roads being open.

    Nope, line is too far away from the highway/mine to be affected. (500m-1000m)

    waht point are you making LowndesJ515?  speedemon08's response is entirely reasonable (even if the distance is in the over estimated end of the stick).

    The mine doesnt go underground, it's an open cut. What you see is what you get....

    And my dad works as Hazelwood.
