Saw the same train heading through Seven Hills at about 1. The shiny new PHTH hoppers looked quite out of place on the western line!

Does anyone have more details of this service?

SSR have a contract with Centennial Coal to transport "overflow" ie extra coal that the current PN trains cannot keep up with.

What would the Run Numbers be for these trains?

SSR and QR are getting all the good running. All we'll be left with at PN is the rubbish like Pelton!

Ah you seem to forgotten the North West ...... Gunnedah and beyond.
Haven't seen SSR or QRN up there lately??
I don't think PN ordered more TT1xx's for nothing.

It's the contract that Genesee and Wyoming were going for in 2010 and lost, much in the same vein that GWA also went for the Pelton contract and lost it to PN, then PN tried to walk away from it and has now apparently forced Yancoal to sign a 10 year contract when 'other operators' (I won't say which ones - pretty obvious really) were apparently not interested because the work was 'beneath them'....

Hi All,

To my understanding, the companies don't look at the work as rubbish or someone else's left overs. The market is there for the different company's to be involved in coal haulage in the Hunter & elsewhere. Just because train crews don't like particular running isn't a shared thing with the rail operators. I'd love to run out to Pelton, but my company doesn't run trains there. I like the job, I like the running that I have and it beats dealing with passengers day in and day out. I was at Hillsbus and from what I've seen of the M2 at present, I'm glad that I chose to get on the trains.

Pelton? Whats the issue with running trains out there? If its a train load a day who cares work is work.

I was wondering what the story was with the SSR coal trains on the Mountains. Thanks for clearing it up.

It's good to see some variety in the mountains. I just wish QRN would come up the Mountains.

When there is a half decent program on, It's usually qutie a bit more thean one one train load a day.

On a regular day, you can get 2.5-3 runs out of one rake, when there is a big lift, there is really not much change, maybe squeeze a 4th run out of the rake. The pelton table is very flexible with alot of dwell time built into it.

Well QR isn't getting any southern coalfield working yet, so not ALL the good running. Cool If the plans for mines south of Mudgee take shape that might change. At present 180 tonne locos and 120 tonne hoppers cannot operate past Ulan since the line from there to Gulgong and elsewhere isn't up to the standard.
