There was also work going on with the single Mainline yesterday, between Dingo & Brolga. Heaps of FRS guys and a couple of Petti's.
Not sure exactly what they were doing though.

Can anyone provide some updates on the RIO loco roster? Any new GEVOs? Any new retirements? BHPB is rather well documented and FMG I know has an order for SD70ACes but RIO is more of a mystery.

14 day shut coming up on the Deepdale line from Western Creek to Mesa (not sure which Mesa), infrastructure upgrades, culvit repairs etc. etc.

Loco unload coming up in the next couple of days, don't have any info on what's coming in as yet, might be able to find out tonight.

"J Series" wagon unload on the 16th June.

I haven't found out yet though... I'll check on Friday.

Couple of pics of the unload. Don't hate on me because they're sh!tty iPhone pics...
I wasn't working during the "actual unload" but these loco's have only just been dropped off of the trucks.
Unsure of final number but there where at least 8 as that's what I counted in the shop.

Jason,

Thank you for the pics of the new Rio loco's. Unfortunately your flickr account is set to private so I couldn't see the other pics. But great work and I, as I am sure many others are, look forward to seeing many more of your pics.

Cheers,
Hendo

Thanks for the pics Jason, know if any more EVOs are on order or if RTIO will finally go with AC traction?

No problems mate.
I honestly have no idea about their purchasing options, but if their wagons purchases are anything to go buy, they'll continue down the same route.
They seem to commit to something a bit early and it ends up hurting them in the long run.
A lot of the maintainers hate the Evo's, and they definitely seem to have their issues.

But, as I say, I don't have any real knowledge into what they may, or may not, purchase in the future.

Hard to say mate, there's 4 different Resi crews & 4 different FIFO crews at Wagons & Loco's so you're looking at about 48-64 slots for FIFO's and the same again for Resi's.

No harm in applying, there are around 50 odd jobs going around the Pilbara area.
Rio has lost a lot of experience in recent years, experienced loco fitters, so if you have loco experience it could be easier to get in.
Check out the employment site https://riotinto.taleo.net/careersection/4/jobsearch.ftl

I'll keep my ears open as to if they are chasing more guys, sometimes it's just a case of throwing your resume at them and it goes from there.

Thanks Jason, rail is about the only thing I have not worked on, I was looking more and general diesel mechanic work, but engines are engines in my books.

Wouldn't mind getting work up there sitting in the drivers seat but as far as it appears neither operators up there hire trainees.

Maybe but they are great to shelter under when it's 50 degrees or piffing down with rain. Smile

These were the last of DC traction, the next order of EVO's will be AC and I haven't heard when they are rocking up. Seems to be 3 or 4 months in between deliveries and they come in dribs and drabs, ie sometimes 2 sometimes 10.

You'd be unlucky to come up here as a fitter, even more so as a HD fitter, and not get some kind of work.

There's a bit of a hold on at the moment, Rio believe they have too many car knockers and not enough yard drivers so the most recent "school" has been put on hold.

Funny how they do that, not really sure as to why.
Maybe it's a logistics thing, can't have the maintenance side of the shop slowed down for a long period etc.

I wonder AC Evo's will be a little more reliable... Might keep the maintainers a bit happier anyway Very Happy

Should be atleast more powerful in terms of tractive grunt vs the DC units. AC units are also meant to be less maintenance intensive compared to the DC locos aswell thanks to a lack of brushes and whatnot, I guess we'll find out anyway.

According to Western Rail e-zine issue 192 the first of FMGs 20 SD70ACes have started down the production line at EMD Muncie.

Confirmed the delivery number at 12.

And RTIO will NOT be going AC anytime soon.
They were going to, but have apparently decided to stick with DC for the foreseeable future.

I did hear differently after asking some of the old mans contacts at RIO but theyre not involved in rail so I guess that's more grain of salt than anything.

All 12 GEVO's have been back to the workshop for repairs since commissioning.

Does anyone know if this is a common occurrence with the ES44DC(i)'s?

I know the RIO GEVOs are problem children but I've never heard of them returning so soon.
